Doesn’t care about wealth inequality as opposed to our current commerce secretary who is a venture capitalist. It’s amusing to read the reactions to these picks saying things to sound alarmist that have been true across every administration. Of course we should be caring about venture capitalists and crypto bros running commerce but like we should care about it all the time!

 

What part of "blue no matter who" do you not understand?

 

I think presenting this as a major motivating factor for the vast majority of Latinos who voted for Trump is circular logic on the part of liberals. This feels yet again like they are looking to let themselves off the hook for not motivating people to vote for them. “Voters are too piggish and grotesque for us to win (never mind the fact that the average American voter likely cannot name three policies we ran on), time to grind Trans people into paste and message on how we’ll actually be the ones to better annihilate non-existent drug mule migrants.”

However, entertaining the premise for a minute, if the democrats ran a campaign with any salient, credible message of how they would benefit the lives of these voters, would they still vote for Republicans? My feeling is, a lot of them would vote for the person making a more compelling case to make their lives better. The problem is that the Democrats are a Party that is wholly owned and solely beholden to a class of people who do not have the same class interests as this - and the vast majority of other - voters, Latino and otherwise. Pretty much everything I’ve said here can also be said of the Republicans, but they are significantly better prepared to recognize people’s hardships and redirect them to xenophobia and racism because they will at least acknowledge that something is wrong in this country (even while purposefully misidentifying it), while the Dems spent a lot of the Biden term/Harris campaign either ignoring or trying to deny that basic fact. How would these folks have voted if things like universal healthcare, better wages, or a control on prices were all on the line? We won’t know, and to that exact point, it was the party’s proximity to fuckin Uber of all companies that killed the last one - the single best messaging position either candidate would have had to address the single most critical issue of the entire campaign! These types of contradictions have made it so that, over the course of several years, popular policies associated with the left cannot be credibly ran on by the Dems. And to be honest, good: we were never going to achieve those things with the democrats in office because of the party’s true class allegiance, so this represents an excellent moment to break from them permanently. 2016-2024: a case study.

My prediction is that the democrats are going to mostly try to ditch their 2010s social justice commitments and say that they are instead the party of good governance/competence and can better administer the Trump policies that he’s unable to get done. A continuation of the nothingness they’ve been offering for decades and with an increased open willingness to completely trample over marginalized groups. They will only win or lose elections based on the prevailing feelings on Trump/the Republicans at the time those elections are taking place. When they hold power, they will quickly lose it.

 

The bolded is what I keep coming back to and I gotta be honest....the more interviews you read of voters, the more disheartening it is. I know i know it's just individual interviews and you can't make vast sweeping judgements on individual voters interviews, but...man, I really, really want to believe a set of polices focused on working class issues and a populist message of fighting back against the plutocracy and etc would be enough to swing these voters back, but the things these people are saying in these interviews are really disheartening because some of it does come off like it really is the i got mine now get fucked attitude. Which is something Trump and the whole right wing mediasphere has been pushing and making it seem cool and "edgy" to be that way and etc.

Idk...I agree with a lot of what you're saying but also am not convinced it would simply take dropping the corporate interests and gaining credibility on left wing issues would fix this. Maybe I'll be less depressed and have more optimism about that as an idea in the future but shit man, these people are saying some fucked up stuff in these interviews lol

And there is one aspect of this that you didn't touch on that I'd be curious to hear what you think, and it's all the fear mongering about socialism and communism and etc. Any time a Dem steps anywhere left of MAGA, it gets fear mongered as socialism and etc etc, and that shit seems to work in drumming up sentiment against those things. Trumpism seems to get let off the hook from its voters because a lot of it seems to be slightly suggesting (lying) that they're gonna help people, but really they're gonna be using the government to punish all the "others", and that's what's going to make your life better. Are enough of those folks able to be convinced that actually we can make your life better without crushing immigrants or trans people or etc? Or will they get fear mongered into that being "socialism" and whatever other dumbass stuff? And especially young white dudes. So many of them seem to have been brain poisoned by a right wing ecosystem that won't be going away. I don't know if there's a way to reverse that.

 

I think trying to actually build up working class solidarity is at least a start that could snowball into getting these people on board with the other things you want

Yeah agreed it has to start there I think. I thought Biden was great on the unions thing but it always felt like it wasn't a focus. I think it needs to be a focus and really dive into labor issues and labor power and etc.

It's only local politics but one heartening thing for me has been sitting in on the special election forums for my local dems the last few nights and hearing pretty much every candidate talk about unions/their union history/membership/support for labor/etc. I trusted some of them more than others but it was clear that a lot of them at least realize how important it is.

 

What a lot of the exit polls and interviews have told me, and some of the reddest states passing "progressive" policies has told me is that for most people, we're not that far off in the things we want across the aisle. Sure, you have your diehard MAGA folks that are likely too far gone, but most people just want to be able to provide for their family and not worry about what will happen if an unforeseen financial situation hits. That's why I think building up that working class solidarity and making people realize that both the elitist Dems and Republicans and one and the same. It's going to take time to rebuild that solidarity after what 50 years of neoliberalism has done to this country, but fuck man, it's got to start somewhere

Heard on the Majority Report that Ossoff is being talked about as setting up a run for President in the next election. Speculation was that among other things his vote to stop the arms transfers was a signal (along with being the correct vote) for that being the case.
