  4. I wish I understood more about Pakistan. There's been a lot of tribal violence and political violence in the last week is what I mainly know.

Wait are the Islamist groups advancing or the Kurdish? Or are they united for now only to fight it out once Assad regime is toppled?

  24. The group advancing now is Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) who's leader has complicated Jihadi origins, started with ISIS precursor groups and AQ. HTS, allied with "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) or the "moderate rebels" had a hard, violent break with AQ and the other less moderate moderate rebels. "Moderate rebels" for a while meant "not ISIS" and so included AQ affiliates but HTS are genuinely somewhat more moderate in the sense that they have been focusing on the national question (a Syrian revolution) instead of trying to form a universal islamic caliphate like both AQ and ISIS. FSA and HTS are centered in Idlib.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA, government forces) held Aleppo on their own before this offensive started, but seemed to essentially retreat from the city when the offensive started. Apparently now the eastern part of the city is being defended mostly by the Kurdish forces (SDF) and any remaining government or government-supported forces, but mainly Kurdish at this point.

The Kurdish area of control is very close the government one in this region, which is why the SDF were able to make it to help. That Manbij-Aleppo corridor has had similar coordination for a while now because neither want Turkish forces to advance. Turkey directly occupies an area on the border centered around Afrin. So the Manbij-Aleppo corridor is where the SDF and SAA controlled areas meet, and also where the Turkish controlled area meets both of those. HTS at this point is also mainly backed by Turkey. The Turks have been waging a war of repression on Kurdish nationalists in eastern Turkey for decades now so the Kurds are happy to help the government fight Turkish backed forces.
