I thought typewriters were really neat when I was a kid.

Maybe I should randomly become a typewriter person in the year of our Lord 2024? :chin:

I'm a bit curious to see how long she waits to try to goose numbers this time around. Dua Lipa is her only competition this week but Taylor should pretty easily tower over her on the album chart and Fortnight likely will be able to top the charts a second week in a row, but usually week 3 or 4 is when the single starts to lose steam and she starts releasing remixes all week. My guess is that the week of the 13th is when we start to see remixes dropping for Fortnight

it's weird seeing the juxtaposition of this being her best first week of her career with the mixed critical reception this album is getting from multiple audiences

I mean it makes sense. It had huge pre-order numbers without a single note out haha

I really think the mixed critical reception was coming almost no matter what this album sounded like. It was never going to impact streams, especially once the “double album” thing got dropped.

I dunno, I'd say if the album was better the reception would be less mixed!

I would say I'm whelmed by the album. I really am starting to get a little bored of Jack's production with her though lol

I'm happy this is doing so well, it's very easily my favourite album of the year so far.

I was in a speakeasy themed bar on Saturday with my wife and The Smallest Man That Ever Lived came on. I'm not massively into this album admittedly compared to most of her other work but that is one of the highlights for me.

Funny, a lot of songs that people call their highlights didn’t make the cut for me. As someone who prefers to listen to a full album, that makes me hate this. But in this current playlist era of music consumption, the “choose your Taylor” approach has been cool to see unfold. At the very least there’s a really strong 12 track album here for every fan, it’s just completely different for everyone.

But as a vinyl collector, I absolutely dread this full album getting pressed.

I’ve only been listening to the first half, I’ll get to the second half in like a month or so- but this album is really growing on me. Clara Bow stuck out to me on my last listen

Midnights has an 85 on Metacritic to this album’s 76. I personally think Midnights is a decidedly worse album, but even if I didn’t, I don’t think there’s a full letter grade difference between them. One just came before the cultural oversaturation point and one came after. I guarantee you if those two albums were switched in chronology, the scores would flip too.

If I went with my day 1-3 impressions, I’d give it a C. If I go with my impression now, it’s an easy B+, almost in the a-range. It definitely has grown on me with more listens and I feel very confident that the immediate impressions for many won’t be the lasting ones.

I think if it were shorter the reviews would be better. The songs are almost all decent to great but for a 31 song album it’s not that dynamic or captivating moment to moment for me, at least. I think a 13-16 song album of these songs would have gotten mostly raves.

logistically, this was a very difficult album to even form first impressions of. at least for me anyways. it is rare that I can actually listen to music for over two hours.

I think this is true (I even said as much at like 2 in the morning last friday!!) but after a week I think the best like, half of the songs on midnights smoke this. I like this a lot, and But Daddy & the black dog are instant taylor pantheon, but the highs on Midnights are really underrated I think and while virtually each of these 31 songs are good I'm not sure that many of them are at quite that level of great.

Man, I just completely disagree. The real issue with Midnights for me has always been that it has zero Taylor all-timers. My favorite songs on there, "Midnight Rain" and "You're On Your Own Kid," would both be middle of the pack on probably any other Taylor album, save maybe the debut. There are 4-6 songs here I like more than anything off Midnights.

I think both Midnights and this are completely fine albums but I'd take most previous albums of hers over them. I'm super curious on when (or if) she's gonna hit a cap on breaking album records and streams.
