Only about six or so hours in, but Trails in the Sky the 3rd is as good as I hoped it would be. After the huge, momentous climax of the previous game, I was interested to see where they'd take it from here, especially knowing that it's essentially a bridge game between the Sky series and the next duology. Smartly, they decided to play to some of the strongest elements of the series - the wonderful characters and deep lore and worldbuilding. So far, it's just a game focused around a single/building that you're descending peppered with doors that lead to little side stories, serving as vignettes for characters (both major and minor) from the previous two games. It's a testament to this game's writing that I was fully engaged for a full 45 or so minute long text cutscene even though the character it focused on was one of my least favorite of the series. The actual story has started to provide some interesting context on some of the more mysterious/unexplored aspects of the world and, obviously, I expect that to ramp up as I dive further in. The writing is so, so good - it knows how to be silly, funny, heartfelt and nail just the right level of anime-drama.

    I still love this series.

So I finished Breath of the Wild earlier today, and for those who've played both it and Horizon, which do you prefer?

This is the toughest question I've ever faced. It's like Sophie's Choice except way more serious.

I haven't played Horizon, I really want to, but Breathe of the Wild is legitimately one of the best games I've ever played in my life

Can't answer that either. Didn't play Horizon. But from just the people I know with a PS4, they prefer Zelda.

BotW is something else though, everything was just so polished. most fun I've had interacting with an open world environment. And I'm fairly sure the climbing mechanic is going to start becoming a staple in future open world games just because of how well this game did it.

said this before, as with previous games that are universally acclaimed it's not the end all of videogames but it is pretty much a game that other game developers would hold in high regard and take notes from, just because there is so much good design in it.

There's a podcast floating somewhere where Ken Levine and other game devs talk about Breath of the Wild. Probably my fav discussion of the game, because it's less about fanboying and more of picking apart what makes it interesting and good, coming from actual people who know shit about making games.

I'm sorry but Horizon is mostly just a great Ubisoft-like open world game (which I like a lot), Zelda is an achievement way beyond that. You can prefer one over the other (I personally enjoyed the new Mass Effect as much as Zelda but I have no illusions regarding how it compares to Zelda), but Zelda definitly deserves the higher grades.

Anyone else playing through Prey? Just got past where the demo apparently ended and I am enjoying it so far.

I'm having trouble going back to Horizon after Zelda so I still haven't finished it.

SO is in the same predicament. The 2 games I'm really itching to play out of the Sony exclusives are Persona 5, and Bloodborne. My SO let me play the latter for a few hours and I've been craving ever since.

Odds of a PC release are very, very, very slim right? One of these days I feel like I'm going to impulse buy a PS4 haha.

Zelda is extremely extremely fun. but I wish the pacing/narrative felt more like other Zeldas. There's like less of it from what I've experienced in watching my friend and others on twitch play for hours. And the dungeons situation also makes me feel wanting. It would really benefit from more stuff out of the overworld to do. I know theres shrines but they just dont excite me after sewing quite a few of them. The little towns and stuff seem like they don't feel as alive as the n64 ones either. Maybe I just haven't seen the right stuff yet from the game. It's left me conflicted like I hope the next one addresses all of this big time.

I totally love what I've seen of the gameplay and map though. Love that you can go somewhere you're not ready for yet and get fucked up Morrowind style. And stamina/climbing is really cool.

Proper Sony exclusives are about as unlikely to come to PC as Nintendo exclusives

@Your Milkshake yeah that makes sense. IGN podcast has touched on this, and I agree, that the strength of BotW is how personal the experience in the game is. Like in past Zelda games, whenever you talk about dungeons and progress-wise you're mostly on the same page, but here in BotW, 40 hours from one person is incredibly different from another. You get so lost easily, in a good way. And the conversation you get from other people who also played the game is always interesting.

And it doesn't feel bleak, or pointless, or a chore. I was travelling all around Hyrule not because there was a trophy or a pot of gold, or a quest marker on a map, but because the world is just so beautiful and fun to explore.

But for people looking for a heavier narrative, yeah it might feel lacking but not to the point that it would ruin the game.

I just ordered the Bioshock collection. I always thought these games looked cool, but never got around to playing them. Pretty excited to jump into the series.

Finding Korok seeds in Zelda is one of the better uses of the open world setting I've seen. I am constantly scouring every inch of the map, and the puzzles are fun and easy enough that they aren't like a massive distraction (coughriddlertrophiescough)
