  4. Another day, another reason to curse at Democratic party leadership through my laptop screen.

Are Democrats Doing Enough to Flip Montana's House Seat?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC someone in this thread posted a quote from a DNC higher-up several months back who didn't even realize there was a MT special election, no? Granted most of the material support is probably coming from the DCCC--as the above article enumerates--but c'mon that's ridiculous.

We still can't do a very good job of telling people what we're "for" we just know that we're "against Trump," and that's not going to be enough. We need better policy proposals and then we need better messaging, in that order.

What policy proposal do you think is not being espoused by the Montana candidate that should be, or that is being given from that the party should embrace on a broader scale? I ask, 'cause, like that article implies:
There are even indications that Quist—whose campaign website claims he will act as “an independent voice for Montana” in Congress—wants the national party to keep its distance. The Huffington Post reported last month that the candidate “declined an offer from the Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez to campaign for him in the state,” citing an anonymous source. The Quist campaign and the Montana Democratic Party did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the race and the scope of national Democrats’ involvement.
... it's gonna be very different what wins in Montana than what the Democratic party will probably support as a whole. To win Montana, keeping publicly distant from the party is probably a plus.

  8. The quote from the Mayor is flat out, completely-fucking-untrue.

    God I hate that guy.

  9. Piggy backing on the Montana thing a little more ... one thing I keep thinking about/worrying about, is that a true 50 state strategy is probably going to need a more fluid democratic party in terms of certain policies, especially in certain districts, if they want a chance to compete. Is the party/leadership/base going to be ok with that? It's like I posited before or right around the election on where specific districts are in the demo ... the best economic policy and messaging in the world will probably not win them if there are a few specific issues the candidate doesn't support or is against. In some cases, defining what the democratic party is for, strictly, will render parts of the country literally un-winable in the short to medium term.

And I've got no answer for it, it's just something I think about.

  10. My point was that, like the article says, if the Democratic Party had a different kind of national message, particularly one that was more economic in nature, Quist won't need the party to keep its distance as much. I'm not suggesting we write language about common-sense gun violence solutions out of the party platform so that we can help Tester and Manchin and the like get reelected, but a shift in what we emphasize might not be out of order.

A true 50-state strategy can't just be offering to go to rallies in all 50 states. It has to mean pushing policy that can appeal to working people, marginalized people, people of color, taken-advantage-of people, in all 50 states.

    But what do I know?

  11. Hah. We posted essentially the same thing.

It's a fucking tough nut to chew on for sure. And as much as I like to Monday-morning quarterback the DNC I wouldn't want Perez's job right now haha

Oh no worries I read it as being within the context of America. This really did make something click in my brain (so sorry if I'm now behind in the discussion). How do you change that perception though? Without turning it into "please don't have these attitudes because in the end whites in power hate you just the same as the rest so the 'joke' is on you" - I hope my thought there makes sense but it's admittedly shaped by my narrow worldview.
