A lot of times if there are advances out that get sent to people they're watermarked in a certain way where the label/band can tell which recipient leaked it

But yeah when it's leaked through the store it's tough

I've heard of authors writing specific parts so they'll know which person's copy was leaked. I know JK Rowling and the Twilight person do anyway.

 

Yup it's exactly like that with music, like artists will add in a random sound effect at a certain point of a track when giving it to someone and if they leak it the band will know it was them by that sound effect being there

Yeah. Once you get to the ARC phase of publishing it gets really interesting trying to keep the book protected but to garner the appropriate advertising quotes and pre-publishing hype.
