What happened that made drew fall so low during his first run with WWE?

 

Well he just fell off, he became boring and bland and no one cared about him anymore. His promo skills got better tenfold after he left.

 

Probably among other reasons, his then-wife Taryn Terrell attacked him in an altercation and that didn't sit well with Vince because he won't take you seriously if the woman wins over you.

Similar to John Morrison and how Vince didn't really look at him fondly after it was found out that Melina slept with Batista, to which John did nothing about.
