Okay! I’m a bit late, but I still want to post my reviews of everyone’s covers haha

    1. Harveyn590 - Attractive Today - Really fun take on this song. I like the different instruments used for the little melody part. It sounds like you’re using a recorder possibly?
    2. simplejack - Broken Heart - Wow, you’ve got a really great voice. This is one of my favorite MCS songs, and you did a great job with it
    3. MrBenjaminQLee - Floating Down the River - First of all, I loved your idea of a blind cover, and I want to try it in a future comp haha. This is certainly a lot different than the actual song, but it’s still really cool. You have a really interesting approach to vocal melodies, from what I can tell between this and your song on the Originals Comp
    4. bradsonemanband (Cootie Catcher) - L.G. Fuad - I always love hearing what you put out musically. It always sounds so well produced! I like how you slowed this song down a bit and made the mood fit the lyrics.
    5. Things So Impossible - I Can Feel You - I really like this and you have such a unique voice. It’s really cool how you, and basically everyone else did an acoustic cover, did such good job at keeping the energy from the original songs with just an acoustic guitar and your voice. One of my favorites from this comp.
(SIDE NOTE: my friend found an old reel to reel tape at a thrift store that was full of just one guy playing like 30 hours of old bluesy/folky sounding songs and your voice sounds really similar to his haha.)
    6. thetruthisvile (Sarah and the Safe Word) - Capital H - I thought it was really interesting how your version is a little more slowed down than the actual song, but all the energy is still there. Also cool idea to have the vocals a bit quieter than usual
    7. 2stepwithsteve - Everything is Alright - i like the lo-fi sound of this. I don’t know if when the music fades in and out a bit was an accident or not, but it’s a cool effect haha
    8. dongusbologna - Everyone Will Die - I think I may like this more than the actual song. Everything about this is just beautiful, really. Another one of my favorites
    9. JoshShulkin (JSME) - Last Night - Oh hey, it’s mine. I suppose I should say something about it. I didn’t actual have an idea of what I wanted to do with this song when I chose it, I just knew it was my favorite song by them haha. but I pretty much just played around with different chord variations and once I settled on a Maj7 chord, I kind of built the rest of the chords around that, if that makes sense. Then used an arpeggiator on the bells and that’s how that loop was created. While messing around with the song, I created the little 5/8 guitar part in the bridge and decided to throw that in there, and also thought it’d be really cool to make the chords in the bridge a cappella. I have a terrible voice, though, so that was difficult haha. anyways, that’s the basic gist of how my cover was formed.
    10. phillyfradet (Jean-Luc and the Same-Old) - Modern Chemistry - I agree with brad about how this sounds like you’re listening to someone play it at like a bar or something haha. I really like your chord choices though, especially the dissonant one you used a lot.
    11. nothingsforeverdude (sailboat thief) - Worker Bee (rough) - Really good acoustic cover of this song. I feel like you put a lot of emotion in it that isn’t present in the original song.
    12. DashboardProfessional (Jared Knapik) - A Lifeless Ordinary (Need A Little Help) - Again, good job at giving this song a lot of energy with just your voice and an acoustic guitar and some piano parts! The bridge of this song is one of my favorite musical passages ever, and you did it justice haha
    13. CoffeeEyes17 - Together We'll Ring In The New Year - I’m gonna echo what a few other people said about your cover being the most emotional.
    14. MikeYabs (Bedtime Stories and JKB3) - The Conversation - I gotta mention how cool it was that you did this as a spoken word. If there was any song of MCS’s that would work as a spoken word song, it was this, so good choice! The piano part is great, too, and sounds really close the original
    15. trevorshmevor - When You're Around - I’m bad at picking just one favorite haha, but this is another favorite. I haven’t listened to a whole lot of FYS, but I definitely think this sounds like them from what I have heard. I really like all the little changes that happen throughout the song, and especially the stylistic changes that happen in the chorus. Really good job!
    16. elemenohpe - Her Words Destroyed My Planet - Everything about your guitar is great. I like the tone of the clean tone and how the electric guitar sounds in comparison to it. and your take on the guitar parts of the song is really really cool.
    17. nohandstoholdonto - Modern Chemistry (bonus track) - Really cool stuff here. I like all the layers of voices and guitar parts throughout the song, I never would’ve really thought this song would work acoustically for some reason but you proved me wrong haha.
Also, thanks to @InfiniteArms @dongusbologna and @Things So Impossible for your kind words about my cover

  4. Thanks for the kind words, Josh! I'm glad you look forward to hearing my stuff!

Thank you. Honestly, that chord (I guess it's called a B+ chord? lol) is my favorite to mix into C-key songs, even if it has no major need for it, I just like how it sounds.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I know spoken word is weird/typically not everyone's bag, so your words mean a lot.

If there's an Against Me! comp in the future, count me in. My band has actually done a cover of searching for a former clarity already, so I'd be set to submit that.

Hey, everybody. Thanks so much to everyone for listening to my cover,
and kudos to the rest of the members who contributed; the comp. came out awesome, and everyone killed their songs. Thanks to everyone who gave specific track-by-track feedback, too; it's a lot of fun to read people's specific/detailed thoughts on the individual songs. And a specific thank you to @bradsonemanband for actually making these things a reality. I will definitely be contributing to future comps!

Let me start by saying that I had an amazing time recording my song and listening to everyone else's submissions. Also, I'm kind of a casual MCS fan. Like a few albums, but never really dug them much outside of My Dinosaur Life / I Am The Movie. I know I've listened to all their albums but I don't remember a lot of them so, a lot of these covers were kind of "new" to me.
    1. Harveyn590 - Attractive Today - Loved the horn (what was it specifically? a trombone?). Shaker is a nice touch for the part before the solo.
    2. simplejack - Broken Heart - Just like everyone has said, your voice is very nice. I think it fits so well because you're really letting those higher strings ring out as you strum.
    3. MrBenjaminQLee - Floating Down the River - I really liked the synth-y strings on the track. Also, your drums sound really nice (were they programmed? if so, the cymbals sound particularly great)
    4. bradsonemanband (Cootie Catcher) - L.G. Fuad - Your background vocals are awesome. I like your guitar tones as well. At one moment it sounds like you're doubling an acoustic and electric clean... and the picking between the two is tight. Also, for the flange effect did you use a pedal or effect after recording?
    5. Things So Impossible - I Can Feel You - Dude nailed these vocals. I really liked your cover. All the additional instruments sound very natural and organic.
    6. thetruthisvile (Sarah and the Safe Word) - Capital H - Just great all around. I was seriously humming this for 2 days after hearing it. Recording is great and the band sounds fantastic. I bet you all had fun working on this.
    7. 2stepwithsteve - Everything is Alright - Your voice reminds me of Tim Landers, formerly of Transit. I liked how you leaned back from the mic while recording guitars during the interlude. It was a great way to add "effect" to an acoustic recording. I love seeing people use space when playing in a live setting and it's even cooler when you can pick it out on a recording.
    8. dongusbologna - Everyone Will Die - Amazing cover. Everything about this flows so well and the ending is awesome... is that a ukulele?
    9. JoshShulkin (JSME) - Last Night - Thanks for posting about the arpeggiator. I was wondering how the fuck you managed to program all those bells! Your cover is really top notch all the way around. Incredible vocals (even the a capella ones), great mixing/editing, and really smooth guitar playing. That little fill you do on guitar during the first part of the song is really jazzy. I lovvve that.
    10. phillyfradet (Jean-Luc and the Same-Old) - Modern Chemistry - I don't really remember the original but I dug your version. It reminded me of like a spaghetti western. +1 for banging on your acoustic since you didn't have drums.
    11. nothingsforeverdude (sailboat thief) - Worker Bee (rough) - This is the song I initially wanted to do (after My Favorite Accident) but I would've done a straightforward cover... I like yours more. I like how whenever he would shout/scream on the original recording you soften your voice.
    12. DashboardProfessional (Jared Knapik) - A Lifeless Ordinary (Need A Little Help) - Another one of those great all around covers. Vocals and harmonies are spot on. Guitar is great and the piano interplay is fun and not overdone. Don't even get me started on that bridge... you just nailed it.
    13. CoffeeEyes17 - Together We'll Ring In The New Year - Dude... cheer up!
    14. MikeYabs (Bedtime Stories and JKB3) - The Conversation - When you mentioned a spoken word submission I thought you were kidding but it turns out that it worked out really well. Can't wait for Weezer spoken word style!
    15. trevorshmevor - When You're Around - Can't say enough good things about this cover. It's so well done. This is really the style I would love to do EVERY cover song in. FYS and HTL do some of the best covers. Also, that acoustic break is ace. Killed it.
    16. elemenohpe - Her Words Destroyed My Planet - Well, everyone else is doing it so... here's how my cover came about: I started messing around with this 1 week before it was due. I looked up a tab and learned the song as it was recorded. Thought about doing a straightforward cover but instead switched my amp over to the clean channel and messed around with the chords. I downloaded Reaper, grabbed an old Guitar Hero mic, a stand and mic'd up my amp. Once I came up with what I liked I recorded my clean guitars (including the first lead riff). After that I added the low register vocals. That was my basic skeleton. Throughout the week I added distorted guitar, high vocals and the woo-ooh's in the chorus. The day before the recording was due I plugged a Rocksmith cable direct-in and recorded bass (yes, on an actual bass you guys!). The day the recording was due I went back and re-recorded some high vocals (I had been kinda drunk for the first set and it was sloppy). Also, I had actually reworked 3-4 lines of lyrics but ended up only changing one (I switched Veronica Mars to South Park reruns). I was also going to make the second verse more personal and talk about my job changes, having to shave my beard and how maybe one day i'll quit smoking weed. Instead I just recorded a sample of a bong hit... and just sang it normally. Haha.
    17. nohandstoholdonto - Modern Chemistry (bonus track) - All of your guitars are layered very nicely. Vocals sound great too. I love hearing people really go for it hitting those high notes.

Thanks so much! I'm really glad you like it. And yeah, there's an arpeggiator effect in Studio One, and one of the options is basically randomize the notes in a chord, so I threw that on the bells and went with it haha.

  13. hey man! thank you so much! the flange effect was in post production, whatever my program had, haha. i do want a flanger pedal sometimes though. i don't think i'd really ever use it though, except for in random little parts like that every few songs or so... :-)

  14. The MCS comp has had 3,583 individual song plays. DAMN! And 2,627 of those plays were from today alone. DOUBLE DAMN!

PS: Start thinking about what Weezer song you want to do, but don't call them out until you see my official announcement for it in here sometime in the morning. Probably around 6 AM MST, or whenever I make it into work. But yeah, it'll be sometime in the early morning tomorrow.

  15. sure, why not?

    1. Thanks so much! The highest compliment!

Thank you. Flow is huge to me so I'm happy you say that. And no, it's actually the same acoustic guitar the rest of the song is played with. I just strummed quietly and somehow that mixed with the EQ settings made it sound exactly like a ukelele. Not intentional- a total happy accident. That's my favorite part of the song.

I loved your bong hit. I immediately thought "wait, did I just hear what I think I heard?" and rewinded. Well done. I love when bands do stuff like that, and this was especially funny because of the lyrics.

Thanks! Haha, I think my melodies are more a product of how bad my voice is, and how little I really know how to use it.

I didn't use any strings or synths. haha Have no idea entirely what sound your referencing there, but thanks! And yeah. I use a Kontakt library called 8dio Zeus for all of my drums. Always happy with the sound of the kit.
