It's the only thrice song I think falls within butt rock.
And I don't use that term lightly.

The intro sounds like the song is going to be wayyy cooler.

Wake up definitely makes me think of "radio rock" but so does black honey which I love. I never skip wake up but it's my least favorite

I still haven't come around to Salt & Shadow yet. And I normally love those kind of Thrice songs.

    Fight the long defeat.

Salt and Shadow is the most artistic, well-articulated commentary on social media and/or virtual isolation I've ever heard. Compared to any other attempt at a song on the subject, Dustin (of course) knocks it out of the park with poetic grace.

I've had this record on repeat for a day or two after not listening to it most of winter. Now that the leaves are coming back and getting warmer out, this one fits.

That's how I'm feeling about it, except that I listened to it a ton between the election and Thanksgiving.

On a related note, the term "butt rock" still makes the five year old in me chuckle.

Man, the bumps in this thread inspired me to revisit this record and it rules. I enjoyed it quite a bit around the time it was released but it fell off for me after that, for some reason. Now I feel like a dork for not giving it a spot on my EOTY list.

Not that it hasn't already been said, but Hurricane is a SONG.

As a Bon Iver fan, I absolutely adore "Salt & Shadow". The fact that I don't consider it one of the absolute best on the album is a testament to how much I love the whole record.

And judging by our lists, I think we can all agree that "Hurricane" and "The Long Defeat" are indisputably awesome.

I'm with you actually. That's why even though this album has some fantastic songs and they sound so good, I rank this album in the lower middle of their disco because it is the only Thrice album to have songs I actually dislike (this and Wake Up). Before this album, even the weaker Thrice songs were always good to me.
