Also did anyone catch the shit happening with HuffPost's "queer voices" on twitter yesterday? I was trying to have a day where I didn't read anything depressing or rage inducing but I couldn't ignore it.

Also apparently added guidelines telling people to referring to "both, either or opposite sexes or genders" to refer to all people.

though apparently its not all great:

    https://www.poynter.org/2017/ap-style-change-singular-they-is-acceptable-in-limited-cases/453356/

Apparently while its acceptable for people to use they/them/their as their pronouns, its best to avoid it if possible and just use their name instead... but people with traditional pronouns are a-okay to keep using them. Still I guess its a step in the right direction?

It sounds more to me like an attempt to keep the reader from getting confused and thinking the writer is referring to multiple people. I think that reasoning is fair.

A plea for help from people who are more experienced than I am regarding diversity education...

As part of one of my grad classes, each student is expected to lead a class discussion on a current topic in education. As a teacher at a single-sex school, one thing that I've often thought about is how our institution would address transgender students, so I figured that would certainly be a topic that would lead to (hopefully substantive) discussion amongst my classmates. I found 15+ relevant articles, but ultimately decided for a less-is-more approach considering these discussions should be ~30 minutes or so. I should also note that this is not a formal academic write-up, but an informal document to set the stage for discussion.

If anyone would be willing to read and critique the handout that I intend to use to introduce the topic and the questions I was going to ask, I'd appreciate it.

I'm cis so obviously I don't know everything about trans issues but here are some thoughts:
    - You might want to include "gender fluid" and "non binary" in your list of terminology, and some examples of non binary pronouns (unless of course you feel your classmates are already familiar enough with these terms or you find you're spending too much time on vocab/terminology)
    - Under the terminology section for "transition" I would also include that some transgender people don't ever physically transition, but this doesn't make them any "less trans" or "less" male/female/whatever their gender may be. Maybe also include that transition can occur at any point during a person's life.

I like the discussion questions you provided. I think they'll do the job of facilitating some good discussion.

(sorry if my thoughts are a little rambly/disorganized lol)

I had no idea that thread existed. Thanks for pointing it out. I'd copy/paste over there, but wouldn't want to take over two threads...

Thanks for your feedback. Those changes are easy enough and can definitely clarify things further for those who may not be familiar.

What about using transgender vs/and/or genderqueer? I include genderqueer in the terminology section, but I realized that I basically used transgender as a catch-all throughout the rest of the document. Is that something that's ok to do, or is transgender limiting with regards to the issue and including genderqueer would help open things up to where they should be?

Gender queer/fluid is definitely a separate category from trans and one that seems more misunderstood so I think it'd be important to include it

From what I understand, transgender can be used to describe anyone whose gender differs from what they were assigned at birth. So I think the way you use transgender throughout the document is okay.

I plan to run it by our school's diversity coordinator, so this will be one thing I definitely bring up given the differing opinions.

If you know any transgender or genderfluid people I'd ask them for sure. If you don't know any personally I'm sure you can find some good online resources created by transgender and/or genderfluid people.
