I would still say I spend a little too much on records sometimes though.

I'm with you guys. I did it for a while with Alkaline Trio back in the day and had every variant of the first 4 pressings of Goddamnit Redux. Then I had 12 copies of the album and was like, "What now?" I didn't get the kick out of it that I thought I would. I do marvel at some people's collections but that's not for me.

I guess I should clarify what I mean when I say collecting a band's vinyl discography. I won't be buying every variation, color or packaging differences. I'm satisfied with one working, quality pressing of each album.

i variant collected mansions, but they don't have a huge discography with a bunch of repressings of each. also got lucky with most of the DUTD variants, had the red/white swirl and was able to buy the other two at a show after they were long sold out. pink one i traded five in print records for. first pressing NBF i bought at a show. everything else was easily purchasable.

this is the most recent one but i've gotten two more variants since then. one of new best friends (on cloudy clear), one of DUTD acoustic (on purple)

that last 7" is on plastic btw, lol

I've been thinking about buying a second copy of TDAG and YFW because I spin them so much I'd like to have a copy that I can keep in good condition, but otherwise, yeah one is enough.

I did it with David Bazan stuff, but that's only because he's my favorite songwriter of all time. Also, his catalog isn't too insane.

Thank you again!!! I just secured a copy of the Kickstarter variant.

This was my Pentimento collection for a while. Ended up selling off everything except for the rarest variants and the euro pressings. Now I just buy the most limited pressing available at the time and call it good.

So, since I'm about to bite the bullet on the $129 Pro-Ject preamp. Last minute question: Is there an objectively better preamp available at this price range?

Most suggestions I see from /r/vinyl are out of my price range at over $200. I still don't know the difference between the $79 MM Pro-ject and the $129 MM/MC Pro-Ject.

I don't know about how they compare directly, but I would look at the U-Turn Pluto Preamp. I currently don't use a preamp, but I think I may need to add one in the future and this is the one I've been looking at. Might just get a new turntable from them at the same time.

Here's something you'll learn about all these products: EVERYTHING is subjective. Some people like more bass some people like more treble, etc. etc. Audiophiles will argue until the cows come home. Honestly, the only reason for you at this time to pay for the $129 preamp is if you think you're going to upgrade your cartridge in the future. I wouldn't even worry yourself about MM v. MC but if you want to dive down that rabbit hole you can google the differences and arguments for hours online.
It is worth noting that the MM cartridges are, as a rule, cheaper than MC.
With your receiver and speakers the $79 preamp will be all you need, I think.

BUT... to play devil's advocate. I can highly recommend this Schiit Mani preamp it's what I use and is also made for both MM/MC.

Surprised there was no talk about the U-Turn turntable on the pitchfork article.

    There doesn't seem to be.
If you go to Pro-Ject's website it appears it's just a part of the "elemental" line. Here's a picture of the back of the thing. Looks identical to the MM.

EDIT: If you look on Amazon it says the Phono Box E was first available in January, 2015.
The MM was first available in January, 2012. So probably just a cosmetic upgrade, I'm thinking.

A lot of people overlook them for some reason.

This is what I'm thinking as well. According to one of the Amazon reviews of the Elemental, it doesn't come with a US outlet power supply.

that sounds bad for records unless you brush/clean them regularly

  23. Which I do - I just haven't cleaned my player in a minute

My player looks the same. Especially since it's placed at the opposite end of an open window.

Just got a shipping notification for the Meds repress. This album has been on my want list forever now. So glad I'm finally going to own it.
