    Cynthia Kroet, writing for Politico:

Sex Pistols singer Johnny Rotten backed Brexit and called former UKIP leader Nigel Farage “fantastic” in a TV interview Monday. […]

He said that after Farage’s encounter with Bob Geldof before the Brexit vote — when the two led opposing flotillas along the Thames, shouting insults at each other — “I wanted to shake his hand because it was silly beyond belief.”

The “Pretty Vacant” singer was also asked about U.S. President Donald Trump and said he was a “complicated fellow” but blamed the “left-wing media” for dubbing Trump racist.

    Sellout.

I swear I remember reading somewhere that the guys in Sex Pistols are pretty shitty people and were a sort of faux-punk band in terms of punk ethics. Could be totally talking out of my ass though since I can't remember where I read that.

Well this is the most anti-punk thing I've heard. Good thing I've never been a Sex Pistols fan, or anything Rotten has done. So much better classic punk out there.

they were literally created/assembled by a manager; ie. the same way late 90s boy bands were created.

anyway, i'm prepared to say this without fear of being banned...

i guess you could say he's a little rotten

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Sex Pistols were put together to basically just sell merchandise and be "punk"

They've always been a shitty faux-punk band, and it's no surprise that Rotten is a shithead too. This is the same band that had a piece of shit murderer in it too

I'm a fan of the Sex Pistols when it comes to their music but literally no one can deny that the whole band is full of people with non-punk attitudes who are all-around pretty terrible lol

This was a year and a half after he said:

    Lydon:
That it’s an unfair world and I’d like it to be changed. A classic example of everything I’m fearful of and hold in contempt is the example now of Donald Trump trying to buy the presidency. This is a real estate agent who thinks he can run the world. That’s a frightening prospect. He’s a classic voice of ignorance with money, a terrible, terrible calamity.

    Loudwire:
I’ll skip ahead, because I actually had a question about Donald Trump. As much as people disagree with his policies …

    Lydon:
What policies? He hasn’t got any other than sexism and racism that seems to be his root cause.

John Lydon on Public Image Ltd, Donald Trump ‘Circus’ + More

That's a pretty weird thing to say about a "friend".

I have no idea how Rotten/Sex Pistols became so ingrained into the history of punk. The music itself was in the punk genre but everything about the band is fake, and Rotten is a dickhead. I've always thought he was a huge hypocrite for calling out newer bands like Green Day for not being "punk enough" and ruining the genre when he did stuff like this

...but this is a whole other level. Endorsing fascism is literally the opposite of punk

People change. Who's to say what their believes were then - Twitter wasn't around in 1977. I know the fact that they were "put together" comes up quite often, but not only do we not know the exact details, but that also does not necessarily mean that they did not stand behind the music they made together. Even if they personally never believed in their music, which I don't think is true (or at least not for all of them), Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols is still hugely important and also still pretty fucking awesome. And Johnny is an asshole.

Guy is a fucking lame who surrounds himself with awful people - like his entourage who racially abused and assaulted Kele Okereke of Bloc Party some years ago (I think Lydon himself said Kele had a "black attitude") - so his attitude here isn't really that surprising.
