i don't think that record as a whole is even close to ixora or YAMS
some amazing songs though just not as consistent

Yikes, ESR is their most concise consistent work. Peak Copeland.

pretty strongly disagree, feels more like a transition record to me
still like an 8.5/10 but i still think they were discovering their new sound

Like they definitely expanded on it with yams and ixora but I just feel ESR nailed the feeling and atmosphere I look for when listening to them.

ESR, YAMS and Ixora are all amazing albums. I love each one of them so much. IM is by far my least favorite copeland and I still really enjoy that record

YAMS is one of my favorites of all time
truly can't imagine how anyone can think of BMT and in motion anything other than the bottom two

everything is at least listenable though

ESR is my favourite album of theirs but I still think Ixora and YAMS are more consistent. ESR is still their most interesting sounding album to me though.

I think In Motion might be third for me after Ixora honestly. It's just such a fun album. It's very close between that and YAMS though. BMT is their weakest by a country mile and it's still great.

i can agree with that record being interesting, it's definitely their most ambitious i just don't think all the songs land as well as the last two

as i said, transition, they finally figured out what best suits them with YAMS

The last three records are the best, for sure. Can't really rank them. ESR was special for me because of high school.

I mean all of their albums are transitional because they never stagnate. I like the sound they had on ESR the most though even if I don't think every song on there is a home run. They're one of those bands where I can see where people are coming from no matter which album is their favourite.

Same, remember buying the album on Halloween, I was 16. That, and The Everglow were the two cds that I legit wore out from playing so much.

Ixora, In Motion, You Are My Sunshine, EatSleepRepeat, Beneath Medicine Tree

willing to bet no one else has that ranking, haha.

You're right. The few people that would rank "In Motion" that high would probably also have BMT up there too. Those two have a distinct sound from the last 3 records. Many fans left the fold when ESR came out because of the style change, and in my opinion missed out on the band's best material.

It would have been interesting if Columbia had signed the band leading up to "In Motion". I think they would have had an entirely different catalogue from that point on. Musically, I'm thankful that they strayed away from pop rock and attempts at radio success. I love "In Motion", but Aaron even said it was made to please the label and there were songs specifically meant for radio singles.
