I mean, it's basically the same thing. Something More Than Free was a 400 Unit release, he just labeled it as a solo record. So no, there aren't two records.

Ah okay I guess I didn't realize Free was a 400 Unit release. Like I knew it was less stripped down than Southeastern but yeah. Really want to hear a single.

    Slow down, Quentin Supporter

I can't drop a link in right now, but y'all go do yourselves a favor and listen to A Long and Happy Life. It's the new single from Delta Rae (riyl Lone Bellow, Little Big Town, Dawes). A little more pop country to this one -- it kind of sounds like what would have been a very strong track off the last Will Hoge. Early candidate for song of the summer.

Anyone heard the new Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives? It's really damn cool. Kinda seems like a veteran/legend was just like "Wait, they let Sturgill do this kind of shit? Someone book me studio time!"

Nice write up. I'd never heard him before but a friend told me to listen to it today. I'm very impressed.

    The rivalry is back on

I get the feeling this album's gonna be a lot more country than their first two. I just hope this album has a couple songs where they go hard, like "Fire" or "I Will Never Die"

Man, did Warner let RaeLynn down on song selection. For someone who's been groomed for so long as the next big thing in country, there's a lot of B-team material on her debut.

I enjoyed most of the record, but I think the first four tracks are next level and then it falls off and stumbles into generic territory a bit. I had real high hopes after the first few songs, though.

I haven't been to any country gigs before (I only started listening to it after discovering this thread last year and giving the genre a chance).

I'm planing on changing that this year though. Maren Morris is playing dates here in the uk at the end of the year and tickets went on sale today. I'm skint till a week Monday so I hope they don't sell out before then. Would love to see her live. Also gonna try and see Valerie June next month as well.

Personally, I don't think the record would work with just the cosmic cowboy stuff. I think the trad/roots stuff that's been his bread-and-butter for 30 years keeps the album substantive with those cool new touches weaving in and out.

Are you talking about the Marty Stuart record? I haven't listened to that yet. My post was in reference to the RaeLynn album.

    Fuck. Haha. Looooooooooooooooooong day.

Honestly I HATE the beginning of the record. Her doing that fast-paced rap-ish thing in her voice is painfully unlistenable. There are some sneaky good ballads tucked in the record. By which I mean like 3 songs total.

Rap-ish? Not sure what you mean by that.

I thought it was a decent pop country record. Reminded me of Kelsea Ballerini a lot, who I enjoy. I think "Love Triangle" especially is great, and one of the best mainstream country singles of the past few years. But going into the album, I wasn't really aware of her beyond that bad "God Made Girls" song from a couple years ago, so I didn't have any expectations.

Ah see I found "Love Triangle" really grating. Ballerini had a lot more wit and craft, imo. When they find the right setting for RaeLynn she has one hell of a likable voice though, so I have my fingers crossed she'll improve.

Kelsea is definitely better, no question. I'm looking forward to hearing her next record. Supposedly that's coming sometime this year.

Oh wow. With her, Isbell and Stapleton on the way this year will be flying.

Too much to hope Kacey joins them?

She tweeted something about being in the studio a month or so ago. I wouldn't be surprised if she releases something in late summer or early fall.

I'm holding out for a new John Fullbright record this year, but my google alert just points to continuous touring.

Man I hope so. I still think songs is one of the best and most overlooked albums of this decade.
