I can recommend the AudioEngine A2 speakers. My girlfriend and I live in a modest Chicago condo so I'm usually listening on headphones. But we have had friends over and I managed to get a noise complaint from a neighbor with these things. They don't take up much space, are affordable (when compared with other pairs [although I haven't researched prices in a while]) and will definitely fill up a good sized room. Never had any distortion at high levels, etc...

Just bought Pioneer's Andrew Jones tower speakers.

Sorta stoked to see what the hype is about.

    HTR-5450 - HTR - AV Receivers - Audio & Visual - Products - Yamaha United States

This is the receiver my parents are giving me. They've had for 15 years or so, but it should set up fine with my Pro-Ject right?

They also have a Yamaha speaker system (for surround sound) to give me too. With subwoofer.

At the very least, this setup has to be better than the $50 Dayton speakers I was looking at on my budget.

  6. Does the price of vinyl continue to climb? I was at the record store the other day and every new release was $30+ and old albums are still $20+.

So I had some issues getting all three of the MO reissues at once and then emailed them and they combined the order and reimbursed me that additional shipping I had paid for two orders. Received all 3 in the mail last week.

Yesterday I just received Simple Math again.

I am not familiar with this receiver.
However, taking a quick glance at it online it does not appear to have a "PHONO" input.
So you will need to get one of those phono preamps you were looking at.
So your set up will be this: TT -> preamp -> receiver (aux inputs) -> speakers. You then use your receiver's volume control to increase the phono signal to be listenable through the speakers.

Since you're getting the receiver and speakers you should be all set. The preamp should be your last expense here. That and some RCA cords and speaker wire. Although, I'd check with your parents to see if they have the cords and speaker wire left over from their original set up.

I'm still torn between the $79 pre-amp and the $129 one, as I don't know if there will be $50 dollars worth of perceivable quality difference. So excited to have this thing hooked up next week.

My goal was to get all of this purchased and ready for Thrice's newest LP at the end of May, but I'm glad that I am ahead of schedule to work out all the "first timer" set up kinks.

It's good you're working out the kinks now. I assure you after this is all set up it really will be as easy as dropping the needle & listening to some tunes.
As for the preamps for your current set up it might not make a huge difference. All the preamp is doing is filter the phono signal through the RIAA EQ curve and your receiver should be able to handle either of them without a problem.

This image is on the big side, but I couldn't figure out how to format it smaller here.

This is one of the speakers to the Yamaha set up I'm getting from my parents' house. Can't seem to find the model # online anywhere. Just trying to research the exact system and see specifics.

Edit: Looks like the forum automatically formats and fits the image. Good design there.

I can't really find anything on line from a search but to familiarize yourself just check out the back of the speakers. I'm guessing they'll just be wired to the receiver but you might want to check the connections to see how/where the receiver connects to them.
This vid might help. He uses what looks to but a much bigger receiver but it should be the same way you'll hook yours up.

I'm looking at the Ikea Kallax to store the turntable and vinyl. Don't think the Debut Carbon would fit inside a square, but would probably be fine sitting on top. I have a toddler daughter who has caused us to put literally everything more than 4 feet off the ground, and this shelf looks to allow me to store everything high enough.

Say I wanted to get into vinyl? What's a good starter player?

This is good advice. Also, given that you’re relatively new to audio, you probably won’t perceive enough additional benefit (which is probably minimal) from the more expensive preamp to justify the added cost. Just my two cents.

    A music review podcast.

Avoid Crosley's like the plague. They will damage your records. The most inexpensive turntable worth your time would be the U-Turn: Orbit Basic Turntable

Vintage tables can be cheaper, but then you risk having no customer service available if you ever have questions. Not to mention the fact that you have to worry about installing cartilages and needles, but there's YouTube for that. Hope this helps!

AT-120 is a good base model to get started with. Already has a phone preamp so there is less to mess with already.

So, I had my vinyl collection sitting upright for the past several years, but they've been stored in my guest room. Found them laying horizontally, stacked on top of each other (which I hear is a big no-no for record storage). I'm going to assume, to make room for her things, my mother-in-law moved them out of her way.

They could have been stacked like this for a few months, as I don't go into that room too often. Will they be okay?

It gets very pricey pretty quickly. I've learned this over the past week or two as I've been looking to upgrade my setup into something legitimate. I was set on the LP120 until I had a friend who could get me the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon "at cost" for the same price (usually sells for $400, got it for $260).

Only other thing I need is a pre-amp, because I luckily received the other necessary components for free from my parents' old surround sound set-up.

Set your budget, buy in chunks. Best way to approach buying expensive things (like building a PC) on a limited budget.

Really depends on how high they were stacked and how long they sat there... The primary issue is warping, and I would expect some of the records toward the bottom of the stack are probably quite warped by now. Those may be unplayable, but it will likely be a case by case basis. Some of them are probably fine.
