It's the same night as Dustin Kensrue, so I'll probably just go after the DK show, but I'm sure DoD and Twista won't go on until late. I'm pretty excited though. I haven't really followed them in a long time, but I used to fuck heavily with Adrenaline Rush, Mobstability and Picture This. Hoping they do all the old stuff.

So after Migos' comments on Makonnen and his sexuality, as well as the "chinks" lyrics on Culture, Quavo drops this line on the new Mike Will track: "Million dollar lawyer, Jews, can't wait to dismiss 'em (Jew!)"

I know these problems have always existed in hip hop, but I feel like in the last few months I've seen a bigger influx than usual. Chance featured some guy using "homo" derogatorily in December, Future's use of "queers" on I'm so Groovy, Lil Durk has some homophobic lyric on his new project that came out too, but I can't recall the track/lyric at the moment.

I don't really know where I'm going with this comment from here but it's been circling around my mind a lot lately and I guess I'm just curious what others are thinking.

I'm starting to notice it more and more too. I'm not sure if I'm just more woke now or if it's more prevalent, but it sucks.

I was getting into Young Dolph's new tape until he dropped the f-word.

Well, as a female hip hop fan and producer, part of listening to the music is blocking out half the shit they say. It sucks. It really fucking does. If I didn't listen to anything that offended me or I disagreed with, I'd probably listen to the same three albums. Part of me hopes that if I become a big enough producer, I could play a part in changing that culture but the other part of me is wondering if I want a career in an industry that doesn't respect me as a woman or a member of the LGBT community. I can't emphasize enough how shitty of a situation this puts me in. I don't know where to draw lines anymore. I've definitely cooled on Migos and I can't listen to Eminem or Kodak, but I still love Kanye despite all the shit he's said, so where does that leave me? Where are my lines? On top of that, I'm also big on post hardcore and metal -- when anyone in that genre says something fucked up, they're dead to me. The line is drawn way further back, so now I've got double standards, too. It just sucks. There's no good answer.

I think it's both, honestly. Newer generations have a heightened awareness of and sensitivity to social issues, which in turn means more hip hop artists coming out, which then results in other artists revealing their bigotry when they respond. I think we're at a particularly odd point in time that just makes the culture look like a real shitshow.

It sucks. As an educator it's something I really have to grapple with. Simply the fact that I speak positively and have knowledge about hip hop creates a positive influence in a ton of my student's lives, the idea of seeing someone in a position of power respecting their culture/values. I try my best to speak out against any sort of problematic language that I see used within the music and hopefully get my kids to think critically on it.

In terms of my own perception of the music, it's a moving line that I go back and forth on. I haven't cooled on anyone as much as I did Ye after the Cosby comments that devolved and basically ruined AP. I still adore his music but am way less eager to discuss him positively without coming across as a hypocrite. Pablo was completely tainted for me. We've had pretty in depth discussions about Future and his lyrics on the old site, he's the one I'm most conflicted about. I view him in almost the American Psycho lens, the persona is incredibly dark and I don't back anything that he says, but it fascinates me. I think the "collection" joint off of his new tape took it to a level that just came across as petty, though.

I think it's not just the culture or scene. It's kinda where the country is at as a whole right now.

Craig Jenkins had some very insightful thoughts about it; his article around the time of the Migos shit is well worth reading.

I don't think it's more prevalent at all, there is just more vocal opposition to it and more awareness of the problem on the side of some listeners. As someone who has been listening to a lot of rap for a long time, I think it is getting better, but we're clearly not there yet and likely won't be for a while. It definitly sucks, but a lot of this stuff isn't quite as simple as "those guys are assholes". I think a shared a Tweet about that topic in the Migos thread.

Was listening the new Your Old Droog EP and turned it off when I heard the line "An oxymoron like a straight ******"

Not sure who actually said it (think it was Droog), but Style P and Joey Bada$$ were also on the track...
