Maybe not with the deluxe album but I think they will have more freedom to explore things with their next album. I completely understand and agree with the direction they went with with California.

Well yeah I mean it makes sense why they did what they did for this album, I just hope they do explore things a little more in the future.

I'm sure they'll have the ability to write a little more freer and not worry if it's blink enough or not on subsequent albums now that Matt's been accepted.

  4. I'm hoping that with the deluxe version, they say, "Ok, we made our comeback radio friendly album that we set out to make. Now we can do whatever we want."

I hope they treated the deluxe songs as their own separate thing, and not just California part 2 because they felt like it all had to be cohesive with it since it's technically part of it.

Disagree 100% with this post. :cringe: The writing is just as good as blink has ever been, no worse no better.

My only real complaint about the new album is the lack of guitar creativity. When I think of Blink, I think of dual vocals, badass drumming, and tons of catchy guitar riffs you can immediately identify.

I can agree with this. California has all those things except the riffs. And while there are some that stand out to me (BTD, No Future, Cynical, Los Angeles) in certain places, overall the riffs need improvement. But not enough for me to dislike the album at all by a long shot

  8. Needs more riffs, for sure.

But to be fair, Neighborhoods and DED didn't have very much in the way of memorable guitar riffs either.

Ghost of the Dancefloor, Natives, Up All Night, After Midnight, Wishing Well and Even If She Falls all have nice memorable guitar parts imo but I agree with DED.

Lol, their recent songwriting is no less engaging than it's really ever been. They've never been a beacon of creativity... they play pop-punk music.

I miss the guitar riffs, but I think Mark's bass playing is a bit better than usual on the album.

Totally agree about the bass lines. Sounds like Mark is really trying to branch off from just typically playing root notes.

Matt is not exactly a riff playing guitarist. Not in the way tom was. So I didn't expect California to have that many riffs.

Right on man, Untitled is a solid record but it isn't my favorite. Enema and TOYPAJ are definitely top 2 for me. California kind of has songs that sound like all those albums so I'm not sure where the dislike for that record comes from, but to each their own!

I do agree with the missing guitar riff-age on Cali statements though. Tom was definitely awesome at that. Maybe it's cause he couldn't sing as well >-p

Jerry Finn is a hard person to replace. But if they record another album after this California era, I hope they try somebody different.

I'd be very interested. I'm liking this new Eisley record he did.

If you don't think this album is less engaging than Untitled, I don't know what to tell you. Sure, it's on par with Enema and TOYPAJ, but the last real effort we got from them was Untitled and that's the standard I hold it against.

This album is far below that creativity level. Lol.

I mean, lets not pretend Untitled is a revolutionary record or something...

Can't underestimate how good Jerry Finn was. I also don't think Alkaline Trio and AFI will ever make anything as good without him. So I don't really want them to be that ambitious right off the bat. Untitled will always be blink's peak. If Feldmann had tried to emulate Finn from Untitled, it probably would've been a noisier disaster than D.R.U.G.S. was

I think all he said was it's blink's best and most creative record. Not revolutionary?

For blink's world it absolutely was. I get where it stands in the general musicsphere and I'm admittedly not a huge fan of the genre anymore, but I certainly think California is a step back from where they were headed (before Neighborhoods or DED.) The lyrics were more interesting, the music and tones were more experimental, and the live shows were top notch at the time. I just think it was a better blink-182, which is actually crazy because Skiba & Hoppus are LEAPS AND BOUNDS ahead of Delonge as songwriters.

Well ok, but people tend to talk about it like it's Deja or something (not even a big fan of Deja, talking about its impact on the band/scene). Sure, it's probably their most "creative", but it's still a pop-punk record at its core and doesn't really contain stronger songwriting than their other material imo.
