The Dance of Death one isn't bad per se, or at least I can't fully count it since they used an unfinished version, for some inexplicable reason. If the artwork was actually finished and not an obvious rough draft it'd be fine.

Darkest Hour were fantastic last night; John's screams were vicious, the playing was tight, the solos delicious, everything was really good. I took a bunch of Instagram stories/videos; if you want to check them out my Insta handle is tomasengrav

Crowd was kinda sparse (sort of a last minute show for them I guess), so allowed plenty of room to get up close for some good shots

Got to chat with guitarist Mike Schleibaum a bit after their set; he was clearly a bit drunk, haha, but he was appreciative of me buying the pre-order, how that's the most important part of the album selling process for them. Buzz around new album is the strongest it's been in a long time

I could be wrong but I feel like they have sort of lost popularity over the years as opposed to when they were on Victory. That doesn't diminish how talented they are but maybe they are sort "lost in the mix" now. Have they ever opened for bigger bands?
They are on E ONE now right?

Southern Lord is releasing their latest; I believe they raised the funds for this one through Indigogo, but instead of self releasing were able to team up with Southern Lord to distribute it. But yeah I think their popularity has waned in the last 5 years or so. In April they're opening up for Parkway Drive in Europe, which should put them in front of huge crowds, which I think is crucial for the band's growth at the moment. Simply put, they need to be opening for bands like Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, or Slipknot, at least here in the U.S. They have a sound that a good majority of metal heads like/appeals to, so I think it's just a case of them getting themselves on the right tours/opening for the right bands. Creating a fantastic new album is a great start; now up it's to them to put a bigger effort into their marketing.

Them and Unearth kind of went down a similar path in terms of popularity. They have a lot of diehard fans but they aren't nearly as popular as they were back in the day. I saw them play all of Undoing Ruin last year & it was at the Black Cat instead of one of the bigger venues in DC. I don't think the show even sold out until after doors opened. I'm not sure how they do overseas because a lot of metal bands tend to do better over there.

I'm curious to know just how much Sumerian meddled in the production of their last record. There's no way they didn't. I mean I still like about 85% - 90% of that album but even then it's pretty clearly their weakest album.

I agree, Unearth, like Darkest Hour just haven't gotten that recognition they deserve and I have followed them pretty much since they started. I even have their out of print EP. I saw them open up for Atreyu last year and they are still a great band.

I'd say both bands play similar size venues here in the uk. They tend to play to 200-300 sized venues around here with London shows being a bit bigger at around 500.

Agreed about both Unearth and Darkest Hour, but I feel like DH is kind of having a resurgence right now and like @Ferrari333SP said, if they get on a couple of good tours, it could help them a lot.

I feel like Unearth didn't really market the last record right, or it just kinda flew under the radar and I don't really remember them touring (at least around here) when it was released. Would love to hear something new from them.

This is a wonderful album cover, and I cannot support you including this album in your new thread theme.

I think them doing Undoing Ruin (arguably their most popular album) might have caused a bigger draw that normal. To put it in perspective, they sold out the Bottom Lounge here in Chicago in advance when that show was occurring (700 cap). Mind you, a reuniting Dead to Fall also opened that show (which definitely helped move some tickets), but Darkest Hour still headlined. When they came through here last week, they didn't even sell out Reggies which is a 400 cap venue. I think they reached a certain level popularity around 2005-2007 (Undoing Ruin and Deliver Us) that their not going to ever eclipse again. I'm happy for their creative reemergence, but I don't think they're going to be selling out bigger clubs in the US any time soon.

I always wondered if they're content with where they are now since that's what happens to a lot of bands when they get to that age. I feel like that's what happened to Unearth since they don't tour as often as they used to. I'm interested to see how this new record does. The Indiegogo campaign did pretty well & Southern Lord releasing it might get them some new fans & older ones interested in the band again since the last one kind of rubbed people the wrong way.
