I used to be that way when I was younger, but soon realized that there's just no point in it. The one that always got me was AFI. I know that there's never gonna be another Art of Drowning or Song the Sorrow. So there's no point in getting upset when they put out a shit album.

I haven't heard a shit album from them yet, but to be fair I haven't listened to anything before The Art of Drowning.

Everything after Sing the Sorrow has just been meh. And Burials was just shit to me.

DU has to be their best since it combines a ton of different styles and works. Plus Kiss and Control can't be beat and Prelude may be their best opener, but it's hard to beat Miseria Cantare. CL and Burials have a lot of great songs on them, their lastest one is the only one I'd fathom saying isn't very good..........but it has Still a Stranger and Pink Eyes on it :-)

I mean, it wasn't bad. But I don't think it touches the three before.

Burials is my favorite, I think it's due to the weird electronic elements that they've added and whatnot. The Blood Album is way too subdued, the lyrics are bland, feels rushed, too much repetition and poor production.

Burials isn't close to my favorite, but it has some great songs like Deep Slow Panic, 17 Crimes, Conductor, Wild and Great 64. They are just a different style than anything that came before except a little CL.

I'm offended that thrice was compared to the dismemberment plan at all

Even worse since it seems like that was used in a pejorative fashion

While I don't want my favorite bands to release the same album over and over again, I think it is a little disheartening that "maturing" almost always means less aggression and more simplicity/pop/soft. IMO that's what makes the mind, especially younger minds, jump to judging the bands negatively so easily. Obviously there's exceptions, perhaps thrice included, and there's nothing wrong with bands wanting to be more marketable, but I think it's ok to cut some slack when people are upset about sound changes. maturity shouldn't have to mean a poppies direction and an overwhelming majority of the time it seems it does.

I mean if a band releases something different than the old stuff and you don't like it that doesn't mean you wish they would just make the same albums over and over again lol. It means you just don't like whatever new thing they did. It happens. All the time, to all of us

On that same note, I find the criticism that a band released too similar of an album to be strange.

if a band makes a similar sounding album twice, if its good i dont care. third time, could get stale but could still be good. if by their fourth album they sound the same, im going to lose interest no matter how good of a band you are.

I definitely want to encourage experimentation even if it doesn't work, I also think having a distinctive style isn't always a bad thing, not everyone can be Prince and Neil Young and truly transcend genre, and they're great examples of it not always working

Exactly this. I always give bands a little extra benefit of the doubt for trying something new. But there's value in developing, refining and working within a sound as long as you're writing good songs and making good albums.

I don't think artists have to try all these different styles but I always think it's weird when people call an album or artist's catalog too "all over the place" (referring to experimentation, not quality) I'm just like oh I think that's actually my fave aspect of them lol

Almost all my favorite musicians change up their styles (successfully) but I won't mind if a band makes similar sounding albums as long as they are still enjoyable. I'm just less likely to listen to multiple of their albums in a row

its almost like theres a middle ground between sounding the same every album and wildly experimenting

What are examples of artists who have a lot of albums that sound the same? I'm trying to think of artists I consider stagnant but I feel like most branch out or try new things, if even just a little.

Or were those artists what led to this discussion and I should just back read lol? This thread moves too fast!

One example is Beach House but they do still sound good even if there are only minor changes to the sound
