Should we start ranking our favorite Blink 182 complaints?

Funny side note, for whatever reason my iTunes podcast library was acting funny and redownloaded a bunch of old Absolute Punk/Chorus podcasts so I re-listened to Episode 69 where the guys talk about Tom quitting/leaving blink again. If you have an hour to kill it's interesting to go back and listen to their thoughts on the state of the band in 2015 compared to where the band is in 2017.

  6. totally agreed about "Sober." i forgot about that one for a minute. i can hear the co-writing there too.

the song "California" is just way too dorky to me. any song that says "Here's to you ____" or anything like that automatically turns me off from it. i also dislike most songs that mention "California" so that has a strike against it too, in my eyes. dumb, but that's just how it is for me... haha.

California is actually one of my favorites on the album, wish they played it live

My fave blink complaint is definitely "too many whoaaas". I genuinely cracked up so hard when Hey I'm Sorry surfaced and I thought "Hmm I wonder if this didn't make the album cos it's a whole different directio..." and I clicked play and immediately heard "whoaa ooooh".

My favorite blink complaint is "it's not blink without Tom" or that they're not as good without Tom.

Look, I get it. I was a tom fan too. Things change, it happens. It's still blink, a new blink. And they're still good. You can appreciate Tomless blink and whatever UFO stuff tom is doing

In regards to Jerry Finn, both 'Easy Target' and 'All of This' were based on experiences from his teenage years. Safe to say he was more than somewhat instrumental in writing both of those songs.

I have a hard time listening to any blink pre Dude Ranch outside a handful of songs on Buddha and Cheshire Cat regularly.

The only stuff pre Buddha is Flyswatter, Demo #2 and early Buddha demos, you're not missing out as the production and sound quality is obviously awful.

This is from the TOYPAJ Wikipedia page but it has a source from Alternative Press they are talking about the song What Went Wrong:

Finn suggested lyrics for the song after viewing a documentary on the first Russian nuclear test; in the film, an aged Soviet physicist says of watching the explosion, "There was a loud boom, and then the bomb began fiercely kicking at the world."[27]

So that's at least one song that there's documented proof that Finn helped with the lyrics. I would highly doubt that was the only song he had helped with lyrically. And like Matt P said about Easy Target and All of This being about Finn.

And again song credits are treated much differently in 2016/2017 than they were even 10 years ago.

Obviously the "not as good" part is subjective but I can kinda understand the "not blink without Tom" thing. I know it's stupid and it's just a name but to me blink is Mark and Tom. They could change the drummer 100 times and it would still be blink. (Sorry Scott and Travis. I know you're reading this and crying). If Mark.was.out. and then Travis quit too and so Matt and 2 other guys put out a new "blink" album would you consider it part of the catalogue? I dunno if I would.

  18. Exactly. It's all shitty bullshit, but I still keep it all...

I'm pretty sure if the other founding member left Blink would be dead, doubt Matt would continue it. Idk I like what we got and I accept it as blink

If Mark and Travis quit, 100% Matt wouldn't try to keep going as blink 182 lol. Tom is a founding member but Travis is by far the most talented of the three. They would have had a lot less success if it was Mark and Tom and another drummer.

You see that thrown around a lot these days but I'm not so convinced. Travis was literally mute during the promotional appearances around that time. He was my least favorite member just based on how little I knew/perceived I knew about him because he never spoke during interviews.

He's a talented drummer and no doubt added a lot to the band from Enema onward, but I think if Scott had stayed for Enema they would have still blown up how they did. Don't forget dammit was a pretty big single for them in 1997.

I need to make my way down to the To The Stars headquarters one day.

I wanted to do the drive down for the Q&A Tom is doing on Saturday, until i found out you have to buy BOTH of his sekret machine books in order to get in. I woulda done it, but was having a hard time convincing anyone else to do it too lol.
