okay just saw moonlight. Moonlight is a better movie than La La Land, but i'm not going to be mad when La La Land wins the oscar (if that makes any sense).

I'd always thought this was a trend but had never gone back to look at the numbers, but this year it stood out to me.

Of the Best Actor nominees, 4 out of the 5 performances are also in films nominated for Best Picture. Of the Best Actress nominees, 1 out of the 5 are in films nominated for Best Picture. The Academy is more likely to nominate male-centered films for Best Picture, which is maybe obvious, but frustrating nonetheless.

Since the 2013 Awards Show, 19 out of the 25 Best Actor performances were in films also nominated for Best Picture. 11 out of the 25 Best Actress performances were nominated for Best Picture. 30 Best Picture nominees were stories centered around men, 7 were stories centered around women, and 6 were around equally focused on male and female leads.

This year was a pretty good showing of nominees from non-white films (Fences, Lion, Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Loving, and Arrival all had non-white nominees). But the Oscars are big for boosting the audiences for small movies, so I think it's time, in addition to noting non-white, non-male nominees, audiences start noting what stories are given credibility by the Academy as the best of the year, beyond the 10 Best Actress/Supporting Actress slots that go to women every year.

Finished Moonlight and that completes me seeing all the movies nominated. It was really good and glad it got best pic, best editing and supporting actor nods and it should have gotten nominated for sound editing. They did such a good job with the editing all around on this.

After seeing them all, I'd I agree with all of the best pic nods except Arrival.

Who watched the SAGs? What did you think? Implications on the Oscars?

Would love to see Denzel win over Casey, to be honest. I was so much more affected by his performance than Casey's.

There some big possible implications. Remember, the Actors are the biggest branch of the Academy by far, and they heavily overlap with SAG. First, Denzel winning Best Actor could mean that Affleck's past is actually going to catch up with him in a way few expected. At the very least, Affleck's stranglehold on the statue has loosened.

Second, the Best Picture race got at least a bit more interesting last night with Hidden Figures winning the SAG equivalent award. The actors were the difference in handing Best Picture to Spotlight last year. Of course, La La Land wasn't nominated at SAG, as they tend to go more for ensemble casts, in general, and La La Land was really a two-actor show. Still though, I was expecting a win for Moonlight at SAG, so that was a huge surprise. Hidden Figures doesn't have nominations in Directing or Film Editing, though, and few films win Best Picture without nominations in at least one of these two categories (especially Film Editing), this could just be an anomaly during the season. I still expect La La Land will win it at the Oscars.

Absolutely. Denzel gave such a good performance of a flawed man who struggled with trying to do right by his family while struggling with his shortcomings due to the time this movie takes place in. For a movie to be just all dialog and keep me hooked says a lot.

Also, I didn't know this until just now, but La La Land won at the Producers Guild this weekend as well.

La La Land and Stranger Things win big at Producers Guild Awards

So, that particular award played out as expected. For reference, the PGA winner went on to win Best Picture 8 years in a row leading up to last year, when the PGA went to The Big Short and the Oscar went to Spotlight. So it bolsters La La Land's odds but not necessarily as much as it did in the past because of what happened last year.

Saw Arrival over the weekend and I quite enjoyed it but I couldn't think about putting it on the same level as Manchester or Moonlight for BP. Probably the best sci-fi film of the last few years, though.

It definitely deserves to be in the field but it doesn't have even a minuscule chance of winning.

Denzel's performance is very good but it's also a very flashy performance. The Oscars like to award films that look like they're trying really hard.

I just think Denzel has the best chance at beating Affleck, and after all that came out about Affleck in the last few months I'm really not sure I want him to win. Even though his performance was the best, objectively, the message it would send to not give it to him is powerful.

Also, an actor of color hasn't won this award since Forest Whitaker in 2006. Would be nice to give 3/4 acting awards to actors of color this year (as Davis and Ali happily appear locked in). Denzel would also tie Jack Nicholson as second-most decorated male actor of all time (they would both have two lead actor Oscars and one supporting; Daniel Day-Lewis leads them both because all three of his Oscars are lead).

If I were able to vote, personally, I'd vote for Andrew Garfield, but Denzel's performance is damn great and I'd love to see him rewarded for it.

That's a good thing to discuss, who would everyone here vote for if they could? I'd do: Hacksaw for best Pic, Vola Davis for Supporting Actress, Emma Stone for Best Actress, Shannon for Supporting Actor, Denzel for Best Actor, Moonlight for Best Editing, Moana for Animated and La La Land for Cinematography. I haven't seen all the movies in the other categories to say.

Edit: Oh and I forgot Best Director. Either between Gibson and Jenkins. I'd go Gibson because he had more on his slate with it being a war movie and all, but Jenkins did some great stuff with Moonlight.

Casey for actor. His performances are just so natural, it's a hard thing to describe.

Aren't biopics highly touted as a best picture shoe-in most of the time?

Yeah, for me it did it all. Had drama, great characters, the war scenes were shot so well and his struggle was sad yet heartfelt. It was a movie I think almost anyone can enjoy, even if War pictures aren't for them. The other movies were good but more one note.

You're not alone. Next to La La Land and Moonlight, Hacksaw Ridge was my favorite of the nine. It's definitely a well-made, exciting film.
