On the ban, I think that Bannon and company vastly overestimated their support, the inability of groups to rally in response, as well as not understanding that confusion, while often beneficial, can also hobble the implementation of a policy such as this. The point of the ban and the confusion, in my mind, was to bend institutions and state apparatuses to the point of breaking them, then arranging them accordingly. That didn't play out for variety of reasons, one of which is there needs to be institutional support, which they do not have; it'd also be possible if those things were weak in and of themselves. They also needed mass support/a compliant public. They have none of these things, so now they've spent a significant amount of political capital to be rebuked by the judiciary and the public. I don't think this outcome was a master plan of any kind.

 

Speaking for myself but I was extremely young when that happened and not tuned into politics, I'm sure many in this thread were in the same boat. Rest assured if that had happened today with Obama I'd be extremely critical of it, and I'm extremely critical of it in hindsight. But we're focusing on the present, what's happening right now.

 

I think he thinks this will take the heat off of him. But, it won't switch the conversation, particularly if he chooses someone that is as far right as Bannon.

Agreed. I think it's obvious that their ideology is so steeped in their brand of arrogance that it blinds them to their weaknesses in regards to policy.

 

This hits at least two of the three D's (Distract, Deflect, Discredit) of the Trump administration.

 

If he nominates Ted Cruz my head might literally explode

I mean, there are probably potential nominees worse than Ted Cruz. But, the huge downside that Cruz has that no other potential nominee has is that I already fucking hate Ted Cruz and being forced to see his dumbass face periodically for the rest of his dumbass life would be just cruelty.

Plus, there's absolutely no potential for Ted Cruz to ever have moments like Roberts saving the ACA or Kennedy siding with the liberals on LGBTQ issues. He's as rigid and immovable as all right-wing extremists are.
