Had some friends over Friday night and watched Baghead and The House of the Devil. Ultimately enjoyed both, although Baghead was underwhelming and THOTD was something much more special.

house of the devil is one of those movies that flirts with the "slow burning horror" vs "nothing happens for 90% of the movie and then something does" line a little too closely for the acclaim it got, but ultimately i liked it. so atmospheric.

  8. I think many have tried but few have mastered the "tribute to classic horror while still being original" film quite like THOTD does. Not saying it was the greatest horror film of the decade or anything, but I was very, very pleased with its cinematography, direction and overall execution. Genuinely frightening and disturbing without relying too heavily on the tropes it nods at throughout.

its dedication to the bit of using old technology both to film and in the film worked in its favor. occasionally wore it a little too hard on the sleeve but it played it well overall

I should probably rewatch that soon. I didn't live it when I first saw it but I was kinda just getting into horror at the time

The second spoiler you tagged, I think that was the point of the movie.

It basically said that justice in unfair today, which is such a broad statement.
Also, when any of you guys were in high school, do you remember having girls in your room, with the door closed, WHILE DRINKING, then your parent checks on you and leaves the house.

Varsity Blues is still the best at the unrealistic portrayal of high school students, but this was pretty bad for 2016/17.

The various nights of hard drinking, the overnight bender at a strip club, the stealing of a cop car while naked, with a bunch of girls....

Don't forget high school girls in a whipped cream bikini

I get that these kids were praised because of their roles on the football team, but you'd think they'd be a little more looked after for this exact reason.

I don't get how this is unrealistic.

Really? We must have grown up in different times and vastly different lifestyles.

I'd have friends that would have house parties that fizzled out in the middle of the night, but never these HUGE things where parents never cared or police never showed up.

In most high school movies, the parties are explained by one of the characters, like the parents of one kid is gone for the week so we'll have this huge blow out. Typically it's a one time thing but these kids just go on and on and on.

Also, it's totally normal for a middle aged football alumnus drinking beers with teenagers

The Lesson was reasonably good. a new enough take on torture porn, and the (female once-teacher) director's voice is a refreshingly new one. i loved the reversed piano themes. film lagged a bit at points though and the ending isn't great

    but does it djent?

Say what you will about Blair Witch I thought it was decent, though I do understand why some people thought it was bad.

Lmao if anyone thinks that Rihanna is the issue with Battleship, y'all have some rethinking to do.
