It's not really something you can appreciate by watching on Twitch tbh. I watched clips on Youtube before I played, but it's sooooooo much scarier when the controller is in your hand and it's down to you to find ways to survive.

Some (probably overlong) thoughts on the first few hours of Yakuza 0:

I've been a big fan of this series for a while. Its weird brand of serious, yakuza gang stories involving a huge cast of characters, told in occasionally long cutscenes, mixed with often humorous side content, minigames and character interactions, all wrapped in a pseudo-action JRPG package really hits a lot of things I like in video games. They've made improvements throughout the series, some of which were significant - for example, Yakuza 4 and 5 each had 4+ playable characters, each with their own varied fighting style, one was even a teenager who aspired to be a famous Japanese pop idol where the random street fights of other characters were replaced with dance battles. However, each entry didn't feel entirely distinct from the last, and it took until Y5 until they started to branch out even further from the established formula.

All that being said, this game is the most they've changed up the series. There are minor changes, such as your Heat meter, which was a single bar with vague segments being a little clearer with three distinct levels. The bigger deviances have really made this game feel fresh, however. Instead of experience and a typical level up system, putting points into different types of stats, everything now revolves around money. You earn money from fights, getting multipliers from combos, actions in battle, etc., and have to spend money to improve stats along something that resembles a sphere grid more than anything in the series previously. It forces you to juggle leveling up and spending money on the many items, weapons, equipment, mini games, property, etc. available to you.

The second huge change is in fighting styles - as previously mentioned, the series has had a variety of playable characters but each stuck with one fighting style each. Now, a single playable character (and there are two total) has multiple styles. So far I've unlocked two - a slower style reminiscent of how the character played in previous games and a new faster style, focused on dodging, quick punches and stuns. It's incredibly fun to switch in the middle of battles and makes the early goings of the game much more engaging than other entries where the beginning was sometimes a little monotonous before you started to really rack up new abilities. The combat is, at its heart, still rooted in brawlers but there's a good amount of moves at your disposal to work around whatever your playstyle is.

The story itself starts out interesting enough - murder! betrayal! inter-yakuza strife! - but I know that it'll evolve into something sprawling with plenty of crazy twists along the way as these games always do. It's been fun to see young versions of characters not seen since the earlier games and having a less mature Kiryu Kazuma, the series' central figure, has made the character feel very fresh. Even in these first few hours, the side content has been really fun and unique. I taught an aspiring punk rock band (whose members are secretly all softies) how to appear hardened to their fanbase, I chased down a series of thieves to get a child's copy of not-quite-Dragon Quest III back, hit around baseball batting cages and played Space Harrier. The most involved so far is a slot car derby, involving an upgrade system for your car. I can already see myself getting very deep into that one.

...that was maybe too much, but I was very, very impressed with my first few hours. The changes made to the formula were smart, the storyline starts off strong and it's even a great entry for newcomers to jump into. Highly, highly recommended so far.

I have seen other games played that have looked scarier and more intense, this looked nothing like that. Quite frankly don't see what people see in a game with a boring setting and gameplay that is lacking.

The setting is great as well as the gameplay.

The setting and gameplay are both perfectly appropriate for what they're going for. I actually can't give the setting enough praise, it's been perfect so far. It was such a good decision by the development team to scale everything down after the overblown nonsense of RE6. You should play it for yourself before judging it, I can't imagine that any fan of horror will be disappointed.

Just becaused RE6 was shit doesn't mean it has to go the completely opposite and unoriginal way, just comes across as people being so underwhelmed by a prior game that what is clearly an average game looks better as a result.

Watched a 7 hour stream of the game, think I can judge it easily on that basis.

It's a game not a movie. You're completely wrong about it just looking good in comparison, it's great on it's own and a lot of people believe that. It's fine to not like a game but don't belittle others opinions.

Yeah you probably actually can. So what other games in your other post were you saying are better, scarier, or less boring, or w/e?

Well I've actually played the game and my experience is that it's definitely not average. I'm not exaggerating when I say the hour and a half I played is the most terrifying gaming experience I've ever had. I was on edge the entire time and I actually had to quit the game earlier than I anticipated because I couldn't take anymore tonight haha. Horror movies are my favourite genre btw

I've never been so scared by any game that I had to take a break. Except for PT. I've played all the noteworthy horror games and am a superfan of the genre. Though most horror games are forgettable imo. I tend to gravitate towards psychological. My ideal art style is the obscure style of the early Silent Hill and Siren series. Just to give you a snapshot of my horror gaming experience and preferences

    I'm excited for Resi7

Metro 2033/Last Light, Dead Space 1 & 2 and The Last of Us are the ones that come to mind.

Well then clearly I'm not someone who is easily scared then, same with movies to be honest but when I do get scared it tends to be with games that actually manage to do it in a more original way.

The Last of Us isn't scary at all imo. I don't know anyone who would consider it "scary" tbh. RE7 has been 10x scarier so far. Just my opinion.

Not all of it no but it had plenty of parts that scared me more, couple that with better settings and gameplay.

Yeah Last of Us didn't scare me but Resident Evil is...Kinda like horror is subjective and not just good and bad, but that can't be.

    In my opinion:
Deadspace 1 was great AND scary
Deadspace 2 was just a midf*** but great
The metro games were great but really were not scary.

RE7 is definitely much more effective than TLOU at being scary. TLOU is one of my favourite games of all time, but... scary? Just not how I'd describe it.

Dead Space is great but if we're starting there as an example of "Original horror" I don't know what to say.
