It's not really a matter of "can"

 

they occupy a weird place to me bc the songs by them I like I think are masterpieces, and everything else is decent at best and laughable at worst

 

Tom Waits does not have a bad voice you weirdos

 

probably is for people that only really listen to pop radio, but no, his voice is not weird

 

I just listened to this song and I gotta say, I never liked anything from Tom Waits before, probably because I never knew where to look.

This reminds me of a stripped down Springsteen. I'm not familiar with either of their body of work, but it's what the song reminded me of.

The passive aggressive stance of your post is ridiculous. As if you need this refined pallete to think his voice is good. I don't think his voice is bad but it's also not for me. And I don't just listen to pop radio. But I do at times because it's also great

 

I'm pretty anti pop as well which I know isn't popular on here so I don't pop bash so much. I guess saying his voice is weird was a bad way for me to put it, it just doesn't do anything for me I guess.

 

not implying that at all lol. I like pop music and listen to it all the time but if I put on Bjork or Tom Waits for someone who has never veered away from commercial radio, chances are they will not like it at all. and it has nothing to do with a "refined pallete" either, but more about experience

 

I really just wanna put in Tom Waits' Closing Time right now.

 

I don't really shit on pop music as much as I used to. Sure, I don't listen to it. But I obviously see the appeal.

 

I listen to a lot of unconventional vocalists. I just don't like tom waits lol

 

Weird to see lots of people unify around thinking a voice is weird haha, whenever I'm put off by any particular vocals it always seems like I'm the only one

I can't speak on Tom Waits though, because I've never listened to him

Wow I thought I was pretty much alone in my dislike for the Front Bottoms haha. Haven't ever thought to post that opinion in here but it's nice to see that others agree, the hype that surrounds them is so confusing to me

 

I can't get into alot of Tom Waits but his voice on "Closing Time" is hardly polarizing or overly strange. That's a phenomenal record.

 

This is random but how do you guys feel about Collective Soul? Their self titled came on in a shuffle and I still think it holds up and they are a fun simple band.

 

You aren't the only person who has said Closing Time is great even if Tom Waits isn't for them, I guess I'll have to check that out.

 

Seriously at least try it. Listen to "Ol 55" and "I Hope That I Dont Fall In Love With You".

His earlier stuff is certainly more tolerable and i aim to spend more time with it at some point but it's still a kind of raspy vocal that I'm just not a huge fan of.

 

There are a few songs I like from the Fromt Bottoms' last album, but overall their hype is very confusing to me

I'm a fan of the Collective Soul self titled

 

I'd rather listen to Pet Sounds than any Beatles album
