I still haven't seen anything toxic there in the last 2-3 years. The people there were enthusiastically on the right side of gamer gate.

Hyper Light Drifter continues to be great. It has co-op as it turns out but that makes it very very easy.

I've come around on MGSV quite a bit. But yeah... a more linear, story focused experience (What MGS) does well would have been truly exceptional.

As it is now. I can only say MGSV is good.

 

Mods are usually very fast to shut them down, but there's usually a really racist, sexist or homophobic thread every couple of months.

I mean I just saw someone calling link in BoTW a "femboy" in a derogatory way because of his legs???

 

Yeah I wish it had a massive indoor or underground compound to infiltrate. It needs more environments. An indoor/outdoor dichotomy would have made it the perfect sneaking game. Story completely sucks. I don't think Kojima could or wanted to do anything good with the story since after 3.

I wish MGSV was broken up in levels rather than one huge open world. Levels the size of Ground Zeroes would've been perfect, and still would've gave us the open world feel.

 

MGSV is my favorite game of this generation pretty easily. Could not stop playing it for the longest time, probably spent a good 150 hours getting all the upgrades and messing around with them and stuff. Game was just pure sandbox fun, and I even liked the story a decent amount just wish it had ended on its own terms.

 

I think I might end up picking this up on the switch now unless there's a huge difference in graphics or if it's released much later than the PS4.

Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 9, or Mother?

Or something else?

I've never played any of this shit but I've always been interested to.

Yeah just get all those. Never played Mother though. But FFVI and Chrono Trigger are like two of the best rpgs of all time.

 

Don't play Mother 1, play Mother 2, or "Earthbound" as it is called in the west

 

Even though I never played any of the Mother series I always play as Ness in Smash Brothers.

 

Chrono Trigger is a great place to start for JRPGs - fantastic story and cast, varied environments, fun premise, on the shorter side (will probably take you ~25-30 hours first time through), and a great battle system (with enemies on the map instead of random encounters, which I think works better for newcomers). It's an absolute classic for a reason, easily one of the pinnacles of the genre. If someone is new to JRPGs, Chrono Trigger is always where I tell them to start.

FF6 in particular is, depending on the day you ask me, occasionally my favorite game of all time and certainly my favorite Final Fantasy. FF6 gets bonkers with the premise, has some pretty mind-blowing twists, huge cast with a lot of variety in the way their play styles. FF9 is also quite good.

Xenogears is good but is also kind of the worst kind of JRPG - often very overwhelming with some real nonsensical plot in the second half. Good for genre veterans, not great if you've never played one.

Mother isn't great, but Mother 2/Earthbound and Mother 3 are. Earthbound can be kind of difficult but the series' setting/enemy and world design is so unique and charming that they're unlike anything else. Earthbound should be on your list to play eventually but maybe don't start there.

tl;dr - play Chrono Trigger, then FF6

 

I kind of want some batshit existential plot and characters foremost out of my jrpg experience. And have the game not be a chore to get through gameplay wise.

 

Hah, maybe Xenogears it is then. It keeps the same basic core battle system Square loved to use (same as Chrono Trigger and most Final Fantasy games), adds robot battles and you don't get more batshit insane and convoluted than Xenogears.

 

Chrono Trigger and FFVI will do you well.

 

I need to go back and play Xenogears again.

 

You should play Dragon Quest 5

 

Idk anything about that series. Is it batshit too?
