I don't say problematic anymore. One might as well just say they're racist, sexist, transmisogynist, etc.

I mean problematic as a word is an adjective. It can be used to describe more than just racism, sexism, etc, etc, etc.

I wouldn't strike it completely from your vocabulary.

I should have been clear. I don't use it in that context any longer.

I've never liked the word problematic. Always comes off half-hearted and passive aggressive. Like you want to call them racist but dance around it instead.

YEah it's iffy. I think it's used a lot when pointing out the faults in someone who has actually done a lot of positive.

I tend to use problematic when I don't know how else to classify the comment.

And example would be if someone made a comment about how great Warped Tour is and how well Kevin Lyman handles everything. Would that be considered a misogynistic comment given Lyman's past behavior or would it just be referred to as a shitty comment? In a case like that I'd use problematic for my own ignorance on a more specific word to use to describe what was said.

I guess this was basically my feeling toward the word. I also feels like it implies that other people are going to take the words to heart and start using them as their own.

It's used when something is, just that, problematic. I'm not sure there is ulterior meaning to this word like some are implying. It's basically just a synonym for difficult, tricky, hard, controversial, etc.

Problematic is the word I use before I actually go in depth to explain why something is racist, sexist, classist, etc when they ask, "What do you mean, Nate?"

    It's like preface.

I think this conversation can come to a conclusion. I think we have more of an understanding.

  17. I don't think I heard the term used to mean racist, classist, etc. until fairly recently.

Now that I think of it, I guess I was implying that the poems were difficult, since it seems like no one knows how to react in class.

edit: Bringing it back to my initial question. We're workshopping him today. What do.

I appreciate that clarification. It's kinda what I figured you meant.

  19. I don't know, I kind of meant it both ways in that it was misogynistic and difficult.

I've learned that I have a huge problem with my expectations. I always feel like everything should be presented to me immediately. Kinda like fast food. Like, why don't I have results yet? But I know that isn't how things operate. The Army had an unspoken, 'hurry up and wait' policy. When I left, I thought things would change. Alas, the is just that way of the world.
