  1. Lights Out definitely relied on a gimmick, but it was an effective gimmick. Not one that warrants a sequel, but good enough for one film. There were some slight subversions of horror tropes. I thought it was decent. Plus, the film runs at a tight 80min, which is nice ha.

Seriously, it's like some of the frequent visitors abandoned ship. It's not like AP.net went dead, it was rerouted to Chorus.

i dunno, because i feel like it starts showing its weaknesses in the gimmick right away. the rules don't make sense and aren't super consistent, it seems. in a movie like It Follows, there's enough thematic depth and originality that it manages to get away with that, but not so much here imo.

  4. It Follows is a much better movie, so I won't argue too much there. I just found Lights Out enjoyable enough, even though I didn't love it. It was middle of the pack as far as what I saw last year.

Oh yah that was just a point of comparison in that it's a movie that handles inconsistent rules well

  6. Yeah, for how short it was and the reception it got, I guess I was just expecting a lot more from Lights Out. Not really a bad film, just a bland one.

yeah the high rating was what baffled me the most, it was so mediocre and i thought we're way beyond having good faith for tired horror movies since we'v ehad so many exceptional ones lately

I'm Rabe from AP. Popped in and out of the thread, but far from any of the major contributors.

The Visit wasn't bad, maybe the best movie M Night's done since Unbreakable. that's not necessarily a glowing endorsement because the classic M Night motifs/flaws are there... the germaphobe, the sudden importance of sports, the gimmicky (if not bad, in this case) twist... sometimes the horror/humor line was a little tough to tell if I should be laughing because M Night thought this was scary or funny, or because knew how hammy it was.

one of the more noticeable weaknesses of the film was... like, were the grandparents supernatural at all? or did they just straight up murder the actual grandparents from the hospital and then ditch and nobody noticed? how's that make any real sense?

I posted in the AP horror thread sometimes but my taste and opinions were just as trash then as they are now so I was never a good interesting poster lol

Just finished The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Didn't know anything about it nor did I look it up before watching. I thought it was awesome and was pumped when I realized Emile Hirsch was in it!

Anyone remember These Final Hours from 2013? It was an Australian end of the world flick where the world actually ended.
