  1. Have you seen some of his other movies? How does it compare to them?

It's the thought that counts, haha.

@Josh i read Hoshi no Koe but wasn't able to watch his film adaptation, so technically this is my first haha.

My SO has though, and I had the impression she liked this more than the other ones.

    Here's an open question:

What art styles in anime do love and which do you hate? Not periods of art, as all periods have both sides of real and unreal aesthetics, but where on that spectrum do you draw a line? Or do you even draw a line?

For me, I personally hate and can't stand the 3D animation that's recently gained traction, most notably with the Netflix sponsored anime coming out lately.

Since your examples are mostly images of characters, I'll stick to talking about character designs. (I'm actually just too lazy to go into art in general, haha.)

I've watched a lot more post-2010 anime than pre-2000 anime, so my taste generally favours more modern, soft-edged, cutesy character designs. That said, I like to think that I'm open to different styles. Depending on an anime's content and context, different styles make more or less sense.

Shows like Planetes, Monster, and Shouwa Rakugo, for example, are relatively mature and realistic, and therefore better served by character designs that are relatively unflashy and realistic (as far as body shape, facial shape/features, hair styles/colours). Given the content of those shows, I like their character designs.

At the same time, Madoka Magica would not be what it is without its highly stylized, colourful character designs. It's what the magical girl genre is all about and I think that Ume Aoki nailed the character designs. Moe-ish designs work well in other contexts too, like fantasy shows that use lots of visual metaphors, e.g. Mawaru Penguindrum and Monogatari.

If I had to pick a favourite style of character design in general, it would be something like those in Studio Ghibli films, Satoshi Kon films, Dennou Coil, or Cencoroll. How to describe it? Modest moe, perhaps. Character designs that are soft edged and cute, but still maintain some sense of realistic body shape. A subdued colour palette is used to colour not-too-big eyes and not-too-weird hair.

i added nickelodeon to my backlog when i saw this post and i just got around to it and it is phenomenal. you should check out Daidai wa, Hantounei i was reminded a lot of that while reading it, also a collection of short stories with surreal/quirky plotlines.

Ah, see I can definitely agree with you for the most part. Ghibli and Satoshi Kon films are my favorite content for sure, and there's usually a good focus on making unique faces without just changing hair color/style. That's really the gist of my pet peeve with anime. I've recently been re-focusing some artists that I want to do some reference drawing of, and Naoki Urasawa is on it.

Madoka Magica is just not my cup of tea, even as far as content. I've only seen it passing clips/pictures, so I can't really criticize what I don't know. The most I can say is the art style doesn't appeal to me, but I can see how it's style might help when put into its context.

I wouldn't put Studio Ghibli or Kon in moe style, personally. I would say the eyes are of a more reasonable dimension in regards to how much space it takes up on the face, and the faces for all their characters don't all look like they could be plush dolls. Their faces generally seem to coincide with their personalities, more so than definite moe-like shows where any of the characters could turn from soft and cuddly to pure hatred in a second.

You're definitely better at enjoying a wider array of anime than I, which is cool. For me, it takes a lot longer to get into a cutesy form unless it's important to the theme. And if a show's main theme is the de facto 'Friendship rocks!' then it usually gives me a yawn. Seen too much of it. But of course, that's just me and I realize there maybe some great stories I'm missing because I don't delve into things based on these lines I draw. It's why I need others to slap me around time and again when I'm too stupid to see what I've been missing.

Psssh, nah man. Madhouse produces amazing work. And you can't be wrong when admiring art. What's admirable to anyone differs between all of us. Venn Diagrams for the win.

Randomly saw a trailer for a new Yu-Gi-Oh movie today when I went to see Rogue One and I also bought some cards yesterday so now I'm watching Yu-Gi-Oh. I love this show.

  12. I'm five episodes into Shinsekai yori and enjoying it. Fantasy isn't usually my cup of tea, but so far the plot and world building have easily held my attention.

I tried the show when it was first airing back in 2012, but lost interest partway through the third episode. Glad that I gave it another shot.

I've read the first eight chapters of Daidai and love it. Thanks for the rec!

Wow. I forgot about that site. Apparently I last updated mine two years ago, lol.

Haven't been watching much anime lately. Need to finish March Comes Like a Lion, but hit a point where I really struggled to feel like continuing. Might call it good and just continue reading the manga.

  23. I'm excited for LWA and (even more so) the second season of Shouwa Rakugo, but I'm going to wait until they finish airing. Next up for me is Eccentric Family. It's based on a novel by the author of The Tatami Galaxy, so I'm pretty sure that I'm going to like it.

    I do! Josh's Profile - MyAnimeList.net

I'm more active on MAL than on chorus. I decided to turn my list into a glorified favourites list though, so it might not be too useful. I'm also in the middle of messing around with the design of it...

Any specific criteria or genres? I should be able to throw out a few recs.

Eccentric Family is excellent. One of my favorites from the recent seasons that I actually finished. Have actually even rewatched it, I liked it that much.
