  1. Anyone have any good poetry recommendations from the last year or two? Read Chris Hosea - Double Zero at the end of 2016 and really enjoyed it, looking to read more contemporary poets in 2017.

    Just found this thread.

After reading only history and politics books at university I kind of slipped out of a pattern of reading. At the beginning of last year I decided to try and read a book a week for the whole year. Amazingly I ended up reading 67 which was brilliant - it's amazing the difference cutting out a bit of Facebook & general internet browsing did for me!

My grandparents had given me a Kindle so I mainly tried to read 'classics' that you can download for free due to the copyright expiring.

It was a great year... looking forward to 2017 and to getting some recommendations from this thread!

Personally I'm a fan of the Best American Poetry series. I can't really say whether these are "the best" poems of any given year (I'm no expert), but they offer a good survey into what's going on in modern poetry and there's little blurbs about each author and poem in the back.

It is but Wil Wheaton bothers me here. Normally I love him but here I just feel like he's not trying and just reading straight through haha.

Do you listen at normal speed or do you speed it up? I can't stand the normal speed so I'm always at 1.5 or 2, so assume any weird verbal things are because of that.

I'm not listening through Audible. I got a copy through Overdrive from the library and DL to my iPod so normal speed for me. I didn't realize 1.5 or 2 was a thing haha!

He's just so monotone(as usual) it just gets kinda boring/old over a longer period of time. It's weird to me that he doesn't do like different voices for each character so it just feels strange.

I just finished Cat's Cradle and loved it. Which Vonnegut should I move on to next? I've only read that one and Slaughterhouse-Five.

I think I'm going to go with Mother Night, then Breakfast of Champions. Then probably Sirens of Titan.

  15. Highly, highly recommend Maggie Nelson's 'The Argonauts.' A ~140 page memoir / essay about sexuality, gender, motherhood and trying to express what she refers to as her and her partner's "perversions" through language and writing. Read it really quickly, then went back and started dog earring some of my favorite passages.

It definitely takes a bit of patience but I can't recommend it highly enough - it may be my favorite book

I've not heard of it before - what kind of book is it?

It's a novel about a New York public defendant who has never lost a case, but as he sees the justice system continuously fail his sense of morality and grasp on reality begin to shift. It is absolutely hilarious and fiercely intelligent, the comparisons to David Foster Wallace and Thomas Pynchon are definitely earned.

This year I've finished Negroland and Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom. Both of which were very good. The second is a children's book probably for late grade school early middle school but a really awesome story. I currently am more than halfway through The Boy who Drew Monsters and it's a really good read too. Super fun.

there isn't a proper word for the setting sun.

Currently listening to Margaret Atwood's Year of the Flood. The narrator is great, in my opinion, and really does Atwood justice.

  23. Anyone else subscribe to Audible? Just started a few weeks ago. Wanted to see what other people think of the service before deciding if I want to continue.

$15 dollars per audiobook is not at all bad, and if you're really into it the membership discount is awesome as well. In addition to that the listening platform is great.

I canceled my membership because I have 7 books I haven't listened to yet, but for some reason I could get a second One month trial.

Addicted. The one book (or two if you pay more) is nice, but the deal of the days and random sales get me. And there's quite a few ways to get discounts and such.

If you're a prime member, there's also quite a few you can stream for free in channels that I like. I've done two, and have my eyes on a few more.
