Some of the players suspended for the alleged gang rape will be eligible to return next season, right? I would have preferred he go somewhere where his success doesn't mean success for alleged gang rapists. At the very least, he'll likely be coaching players who defended teammates suspended for an alleged gang rape. That's a lot of vile and disgusting people involved in one program.

But you're right, hopefully he's a positive influence. I just don't want to hear any of the disgusting "second chance" rhetoric we're getting with Joe Mixon. Women are assaulted, raped, and beaten by athletes, and it all becomes redemption stories for the men who committed the violence. Just a horrific situation all around and not one I can say I feel comfortable about.

 

I'm incredibly bummed about Fleck leaving, even though I knew he was going to leave eventually, and that this was the year to go. 13-1, Cotton Bowl birth, 1st round WR is leaving, QB is gone. It was his time to leave to improve his career. Still bummed. He's the first coach I've bought into and actually thought he believed the things he was saying. He's incredibly honest and genuine and was super nice to me when I covered WMU football/basketball recruiting in 2014-2015.

I think that Fleck will handle any players returning appropriately, though I bet those players probably don't want to return to Minnesota anyway. Fleck was genuine this fall when he dismissed two freshman who robbed a girl on campus the first week they were there and took full blame.

I'll be rooting for him. I found him super annoying in his first year, but after spending some time with him when I was covering the team, he's so easy to root for. Also, I know that there are "the next big thing" in coaching all the time, but I think he's going to superstar among college coaches sooner than later.

 

I want WMU to go after Vinson Reynolds, former assistant at WMU under Fleck. He left after 2014. Or Mike Hart. Those are my first two choices for Western. I have a feeling, though, they'll go after Tony Aneese out of Ferris State.

Cal has a really good 2018 QB commit named Adrian Martinez. With Sonny Dykes out, Jeff Tedford will go after him and get him to Fresno State. The Bulldogs will be back sooner than later.

I'm actually excited about a potential mid-major playoff down the road. More competitive football is never a bad thing. I do think the College Football Playoff should be expanded, but mid-majors will very rarely be represented in that format (and they don't stand a chance anyways).

 

If the CFP ever expanded, the top one or two mid-major schools should get an auto-bid. I think Six P5 schools and two Group of 5 schools is a really nice playoff (or 7 and 1 if the G5 schools only have one good representative).

Also, what's with this timing from Cal on the firing? Signing day in less than a month, recruiting dead period coming this week? Seems like awful timing.
