I didn't like how mine came out and didn't have time to rerecord so I didn't send anything, sorry I'm a bum.

I'm going to try my hardest to do something for the next comp.

    Well done team!

    1. @angel paste - Thriller: I LOVE this. This and your 1975 contribution show you've got a really great style. Right after the spoken intro, instrumentally I get strong Tuesday's Gone (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum) vibes. A+ production, a great opener to the comp; please keep up the good work! Also, @elemenohpe your vocals on this are absolutely perfect! "We dedicate this tribute...." Classic.

    2. @elemenohpe - Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued: Well you obviously nailed the music! That's so important for this song in particular because the intro is such a jam. Your voice fits this song impeccably and it sounds like you had a great time with it, which is awesome.

    3. Me! - Of All The Gin Joints In All The World: Seeing as the original is so high energy and frenetic, I thought it would be nice to go in the other direction and try to make it very soothing. I also chose to keep it simple with just one guitar track so that the words would stand out more. Thanks for listening!

    4. @DashboardProfessional - Bang the Doldrums: Thank you for participating tiny brother. This is the oft-forgotten FOB jam so I'm glad it finally got some representation. The leads you put in add a lot and fit really well. The bridge is the high point: strong harmonies, cool effects, and the bend out of it at the end is straight fire, obviously.

    5. @bradsonemanband - Dead On Arrival: This is scary. Haha you are the master of making a poppy song as moody as can be. But for real, this has great atmosphere to it, especially when the synth comes in in the chorus. My favorite part is either the lead guitar at the end, or the way you chose to end it with just the vocals. Both brilliant.

    6. @715creeks - Miss Missing You: You killed this! The production on this is so good, and your vocals are really strong. It was really inspired to include the line from Headfirst Slide! Based on What a Catch, Donnie, I guess those lyrics just fits well into any of FOB's songs haha. Anyway, thanks for choosing this song; it's one of my favorites from Save Rock and Roll.

Thank you for the thoughts and compliments on my song. The intro definitely does bear strong resemblance to New Perspective feel-wise. Based on your comments, it sounds like I successfully presented my song the way I intended so thanks for validating that!

    7. @therookielot - Lullabye: Great song choice! I really like the effect you put over it. You have a cool voice; it reminds me of Anthony Raneri from Bayside.

    8. @xkhiemster - Irresistible: It's cool to hear this song done acoustically since the original is about as far from acoustic as possible haha. This song isn't easy to cover so kudos to you for taking it on!

    9. @nohandstoholdonto - The (After) Life of the Party: This is really beautiful. The song works so well acoustically and stripped down like this. One of my favorites on the comp for sure!

    10. @elemenohpe - Chicago is So Two Years Ago: You're really good at covering Fall Out Boy haha. The tonal shifts are really creative! My favorite part is the bridge slow jam. Both your covers add a nice dose of energy to this otherwise relatively low-key comp. Great work!

    11. @Benjamin Lee - What a Catch, Donnie: I think instrumentally, this may be my favorite song on the compilation. I had this playing on repeat today. Your voice works well with this, and I like how you chose to sing it. This is my favorite of your comp contributions at this point. Thank you for jumping in at the last minute to add to the comp!

Also, thank you for the really kind words about my voice and cover. My self-esteem appreciates the feedback!

    12. @xkhiemster - Just One Yesterday: Great choice! Thank you for choosing songs off the two most recent albums; it's great that the compilation represents FOB's career span thus far (except Evening Out With Your Girlfriend, sadly). I enjoyed your video you posted of your performance of the song. It's really cool that you can play so many instruments; I'm envious.
Your cover has a nice fullness to it with all the instrumentation and background vocals. Well done!

As per usual, big thanks to @bradsonemanband for putting the effort in to organize and upload this compilation; I really appreciate the work. I would've liked to have seen more people actually come through with their chosen songs, but I get that life happens. Thank you to everyone who came through!

Wow, thank you! I was actually a little bit iffy on it. So I'm glad you like it. I was especially scared of the vocals because I don't think I have a good voice, but I didn't have the time to nitpick it like I normally do. I'm really glad I joined this comp too. It's one of my favorites so far.

  11. @elemenohpe haven't been following the thread closely, but did you get a new vocal mic or try a new technique? Your voice sounds sounds way clearer on these covers than normal and I'm really digging it. Did you ever listen to Houston Calls? You remind me a lot of that guy. Like your approach to Chicago a lot!

@Benjamin Lee smooth keys there man, maybe I'm coming a little too hot off of the holiday season but they totally give me that vibe.

I really appreciate the kind words man. Believe it or not, I record the acoustic guitar and vocals all on my iPhone through GarageBand and transferred it over to my fiancée's iMac where I added some extra bits of mixing and instruments.

I'm glad you caught my little reference! Wasn't sure if people would pick up on the Headfirst Slide. It was gonna be my original song that I wanted to cover but it wouldn't have worked out. So I thought I could pay homage to it near the end of the song.

Really liked how yours turned out man. I gave it another listen earlier today and loved how enthusiastic it sounds. It's vibrant! Love love love it

Been real busy since the tribute was released. I promise I will do some track-by-track commentary on Saturday... I hadn't done that the past few releases.

I didn't do much for Thriller other than impersonate Jay Z and play a little guitar. angel paste did a bang up job though! I really don't think I've got that much range and I certainly don't see the Urie comparison but I'll fucking take it, thanks!

angel paste really has a knack for this. After I sent back my Jay Z parts, lead guitar stuff and singing over the chorus he went back and changed a few things that made my parts fit a little better... and the turnaround was so quick! I felt like Our Lawyers was one I could really belt out plus, it has lots of heavy riffs which is def more my style. The electro-drums to drop Ab metal-y stuff was what I meant when I said my song was sounding more like something Issues would do. Took a lot of dubs to get those metal vocals "good enough" for me. Thanks for the continuing support!

After listening to the comp a few times, I realized I was the only person to use any real saturated distortion. Definitely the only one doing death metal screams!

The Tuesday's Gone vibe was probably from my guitar line. The Procol Harum (great plug btw, I don't hear that name often around here) vibe was def from angel paste's original work. Thanks for the compliment on the Jigga Man parts... I also sang on the chorus too but it's pretty buried in the mix (you can def hear me as the chorus ends, I'm doing the "fortify" that drags on longer than the lead vocals, it's got a little fuzz on it). I wanted to do one cover straight forward and the other stretch out a bit. For Chicago I just played the clean guitar and once I got to the vocal bridge, I stopped tracking and jumped to the end with the uptuned 8-string. THEN I did that bridge. So I essentially recorded three different pieces and glued them all together. Thanks for the kind words.

Same mic for the main vocals. I used a Shure I had laying around for the death-y vocals (just so I could cup the mic). I'm still relatively new to this home recording thing (started on the MCS tribute with a Guitar Hero microphone and a Rocksmith cable, for Weezer I got an interface and MIDI drumkit) so I'm still learning more every month. THIS month I used some different compression plug-in (which I can tell made a big difference in vocals and guitar tones) and a new EQ plug-in that is specifically for vocals. I've heard HC before but was never really big into them. I'll put some of their stuff on my phone now and give them another shot. Glad you liked Chicago... I didn't want to do another straight-ahead pop-punk cover. I always love how your covers are never the same as the originals and hope you contribute more!!!

I can't commit to a track-by-track, but this comp was really good and really surprising. Definitely one of my favorites. Most everyone did something very different from the originals, and those are usually my favorite kinds of covers.

And thank you to everyone who said nice things about my cover, I'm glad y'all found something to like about it and I hope to contribute to these more frequently. :)

    1. @angel paste (feat. elemenohpe) - Thriller: Obviously I loved what you did with this song. As I told you before, your production is fantastic and you really made this song a whole different animal. Thanks for letting me get in on it with my backup vocals, Jay Z-isms and even humored me by including the guitar parts I tracked. I've listened to this SOOO MANY TIMES since you sent back a mix to me. Question, are you using Melodyne or some similar plug-in to do all of the vocal layering? Like during the "that's just the kind of boy I am"... was that one take that you harmonized by splitting, shifting and layering or did you physically sing EACH part?

    2. elemenohpe - Our Lawyer Made Us... : I went for a straight ahead cover of this... the only things I intentionally changed was added a triplet to the "breakdown" riff and the extra back-up vocals at the end. I had a lot of fun learning to play this on drums... something I'm trying to get better at. Also, I'd like to say that this is the first song where I was actually really happy with how balanced the mix was... I spent lots of time re-listening and watching my mixer levels trying to get everything even. Those meters help a lot more than my ear! And for anyone wondering, yeah I Melodyne'd the shit out of this song... my raw vocals were acceptable but Melodyne helped me get the harmonies sounding more smooth.

    3. @Things So Impossible (Dustin Knapik) - I knew you'd kill this song. Voice is spectacular, harmonies are on point and the arrangement is real smooth. Kind of wish you added lead guitar for the intro-riff (and all it's repeats)... it's just something I associate with the song. Good job on the bridge arpeggios, that's probably the hardest part of the song to nail.

    4. @DashboardProfessional (Jared Knapik) - Bang The Doldrums: Are you bros in a band? You're each incredibly talented and after your TBS song, I know you sound great together. I liked your fuzzed out backup vocals and the bridge arrangement. Def the high point of the song for me. Just like your brothers submission, you did great on the arpeggios which I think really helps break up the monotony of the songs chord progression.

    5. @bradsonemanband (Cootie Catcher) - Dead On Arrival: I heard your cover in my car (which has a horrible stereo) and didn't even recognize the tune! When the first chorus hit I realized which song this was and my head kind of spun around. Great arrangement. I love your bass tone, was it emulated or an actual bass? The electric guitar is great too... I'm glad someone else used some distortion on their song. I felt kind of silly having 2 covers with heavy distortion while everyone else kept things mellow. You always put out great covers for being so rushed!

    6. @715creeks - Miss Missing You: I'm not too familiar with this song (I'm one of those guys that wish FOB stayed broken up... SR&R and later albums have done nothing for you). All of the ambient sounds make the cover sound so full and lush. I personally think some low end would've taken this from A+ to A++! Also, your backup harmonies are great... I assume Patrick sings those parts a lot higher and you had it fit your register with the layering. That filter at the end was a great way to bring it to conclusion. I hope you keep participating!

    7. @therookielot - Lullaby: I liked the lo-fi feel of this cover but I've got to be honest, that tremelo made me kind of nauseous when I listened to it with headphones on, haha. I'm not familiar with the song but I doubt it had that pluck-and-strum guitar style which I liked... gives it a folk/country feel. Good job!

    8. @xkhiemster - Irresistible: Another song I'm not familiar with. Your off-the-cuff, 1-take style makes me think like you're playing this song outside some girls bedroom window professing your love-hate relationship and not giving a fuck who hears it. Yeah she's a bitch but it's part of our love, haha.

    9. @nohandstoholdonto - The (After) Life Of The Party: The sound of this cover reminds me of the beginning of Best Coast's "With You". I like all the vocal parts where you hold out a note during the chorus... it gives it a soulful fragility. Your acoustic sounds great with the low-high strumming pattern you've got going on. I think that's really important when you're cutting the bass out of an arrangement. Keep it up.

    10. elemenohpe - Chicago Is So Two Years Ago: Recorded this cover in 3 parts. Played clean guitar (with a capo to change the key to G#) up until the vocal bridge then pulled out the 8-string (tuned up to drop G#), cranked up the distortion and recorded my metal-y outro. Then I recorded the vocal bridge and thought "I can't just do that part accapella" so I added the electro drums and synth. The juxtaposition of the 3 genres reminded me of something Issues would do... so I made the joke that my cover just sounds bad. (Although to be fair, their first album is a serious guilty pleasure for me)

    11. @Benjamin Lee - What A Catch, Donnie: I love the keyboard arrangement you did. It's lo-fi and droning while the high notes sporadically give a little peak of how full the chorus is. The fluttery "hook" before the descending part for the beginning of the solo is really pretty and I love whatever you used to make that sound. Is it a plug-in or did you use a keyboard with a built in patch? The dissonant chord at the end of the chorus is probably my favorite part... that's the metal guy in me looking for dissonance even on a piano arrangement. I also enjoyed the outro part. Good job. Glad you felt up to submitting this time around.

    12. @xkhiemster - Just One Yesterday: When I heard this song in my car, I couldn't even hear that distorted guitar. I like how it's really noisy while the rest of the arrangement is more restrained. How'd you record the drums for this one? I can tell you put more work into this one with all the instrumentation. I'm not familiar with this song either but really enjoyed your take on it... might not be able to say so much about the original (since I did not like that album at all). And hey, we're the only ones that did 2 songs, yay for productivity!

My issue is I have 3 "2016" songs Ive done and definitely have 2 more I wanna do haha. Might not announce my 2 picks until closer to due date, I've got a variety I doubt even 3 my songs make anyone else's. I'm excited!

I do some light editting in melodyne (slight pitch correction/formantshifting/doing the kanye effect) but for the most part I try to track all of my harmonies as naturally as I can. For that part I definitely sang all those lines, I just layer lots of falsetto.

I'd love to participate this month -- songs of 2016, right? Not sure if it's too early to sign up or whatever, but I'm currently working on a punk rock version of Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" that I'd love to submit.

Anyway, you guys are awesome! Keep up the great work.
