While I understand the issue with the youth sports baseball does fall pretty close in line with the actual US census in terms of its racial makeup. I hate they don't bring that point up in these articles. Its something like 12% of the actual population is black and baseball has hung around the 8-10% makeup it seems for the past decade.

But in the same argument of travel teams have become the norm to be a baseball prospect how is that any different than basketball with AAU teams yet basketball prospects are overwhelmly black.

The best point this article makes and really should stick to is how culturally its attracting way more young white people than minorities. What's the fix to that? Most likely they need to really project their players of color as stars of the game.

    Clay Buchholz everybody...

  4. it also has to do with the fact that even when the game opened itself up to minorities it did so on the implicit condition that they would be expected to conform to behavioral norms enforced by the white establishment

barry bonds has spoken multiple times about this, he's pointed out that jackie robinson and willie mays and other black and latino players always had to subject themselves to cultural policing by the white majority MLB, jackie robinson couldn't have attained the level of success he did in an integrated league had he not adhered to the acceptable archetype of the 'good little black boy'

dunno how hard that is to understand

Not sure comparing to the makeup of the US pop makes sense, since I'm skeptical that male athletes are spread proportionately across the demos of the US pop. I would be interested in seeing how that 12% compares to the percentage of athletes that are African American.

When he is on he is really on. When he is off its really really rough. He is struggling pretty bad tonight. He is just so inconsistent

While its not a perfect comparison for many reasons at its basis if your pool of the population is X than its safe to assume that everything being equal you'll end up with a demographic similar to that when you take a small subsection out of it.

Of course thats not perfect and will never happen. Baseball is a game that is truly losing the youth and honestly as good as they are MLB shouldn't be pushing guys like Harper, Trout, or Kershaw as much as they should McCutchen, Stanton, Bautista, etc. At the end of the day if the sport can highlight people of color truly being themselves playing baseball that is going to translate to more youths of color picking up the sport.

And Goose Gossage can go fuck off.

McHugh might not make it through the 1st, command of that cutter is poor right now

Bill Maher, a minority owner of the Mets, called Harper a douchebag and a dick on the radio today. Wonder if Manfred will do anything about that.

The same could be said of Maher honestly.

I highly doubt anything will be done on that situation. Plus Bill Maher is basically still relevant for trashing people more successfully than him at this point in his life.

Haha, I know, that's what's so funny about it. And all because the kid thinks baseball players should be able to celebrate their on field success as much as other sports. The venom for such a sentiment blows my mind.

McHugh is out already. Geez, he threw 50 pitches in the 1st inning alone.

Haha seriously though. Who even cares. Yeah Harper is loud and stuff, oh well. Maher just can't help himself without making some douchey comment about everything.

I've warmed to Harper. I think he came in with to much hype and probably was a little cockier than an 18 year should have been. But he's really proven himself and is right about baseball being stale.

Watching the Carolina Panthers really changed my view of the whole celebration thing. I saw how much Cam Newton got the fan based involved and it clicked with me.

He definitely came up cockier than he should've been but he's putting up numbers and is 1 MVP in. I like Trout more but between the 2 of them, the game is in a good place.
