It was just like this until about a month after I got the console, from what I remember:
    http://www.ign.com/wikis/wii-u/How_to_Manually_Set_Up_an_Online_Wii_U_Connection

It wasn't just my connection either. I tried it at a few different houses and had to manually connect every time. About a month in, I remember they released a system update and it seemed to eliminate the problem. After that I just had to connect and enter the password.

But yeah, I will agree with the sentiments about the DKC games. I loved both and thought they were great as far as reboots go. They were hard as shit to beat, too.

Side note: I think DKC 3 for SNES was one of the only games I couldn't beat to 100% for that console. I could never find all of the cogs to get the bonus levels, even when I did a replay a few years ago.

I love all of the DKC games and would be probably be the only person in the world not pissed off if Retro is making a third one.

I would be but also wouldn't be. I want to see them take on either another Nintendo franchise (maybe they, of all people, can save Star Fox) or make a new IP. Also I don't know how much more they can perfect the formula at this point. But at the same time, Returns and Tropical Freeze are two of the greatest platformers of the last decade, so.

I don't recall having any issues connecting my WiiU to Wifi. I've really enjoyed the console, I've purchased 25+ retail games and countless eShop games. My only real complaints have been lack of 3rd party support and it's short lifespan. That said I've been buying up a lot of PS4 games and have pretty much put my WiiU into retirement.
I've bought every Nintendo console, but not all at launch. I'll be waiting until January 12th before I make that decision on the Switch

I'm, like, (chain-)chomping at the bit for that Switch presentation.

Good points, a new IP for Retro would be really exciting. I wouldn't mind if they handed off the DKC reins to someone like Next Level or Monster Games

Yeah, I get super excited every time to see the new games unveiled that are all sequels that you know are coming (Smash Bros, Mario Kart, various Mario titles). That 3D Mario was one of the hardest games I've ever played.

If they add plenty of new tracks to the Mario Kart 8.5, I'll definitely buy it, but I hope I'm not essentially buying the same game twice...

Honestly, I also wouldn't mind them reviving the Donkey Kong Land brand and moving the franchise to the 3DS. Especially if they switch developers and let Retro do something else. I actually originally played Returns on the 3DS and was glad I did, considering how annoying the Wii motion controls supposedly were.

Now that the Holidays are over it's like the only thing I'm looking forward to, so it's going to be a long 3 weeks.

Now the follow up question: Should I even bother getting my Wii U fixed? It's a System Memory error so it's not like it was anything I could have done to prevent it, but I'm wondering if Nintendo would fix it for free. If so, I'll definitely send it in, but if it costs me to repair it should I just wait and put the money towards the Switch?

Yeah if it's free, do it. If not, don't bother.

Tough decision. Codename Steam is a great game (if you have a new 3DS)

    - no additional docks at launch, but will eventually see release
    - carts are have a different shape when compared to 3DS/DS

The part about the Switch specs coming from an early build of the Dev kit was what I had been assuming.

^Just to add to your post above - "Wii U ports range from expansive to minimal" Apparently Mario Kart 8 is one that falls under "expansive" which is exciting for people like me where Mario Kart is the main incentive to buy new consoles! It would be awesome to get a heavily revamped MK game at launch and then get a Mario Kart 9/Mario Kart Switch later down the line.

A handful of new tracks and a good battle mode (similar to 64) would be enough for me to buy 8 again.

Shocked that the Mario game will be Day One but obviously in a good way. We haven't had a full-fledged 3D Mario launch title since Super Mario 64.

Sad about no news from Retro. Stoked about Monolith working on a new Switch game.

I played the Grand Prix mode so much, I totally forgot that MK8 didn't have a Battle Mode (ok, it did, but it wasn't enough for me to acknowledge its existence).

A completely revamped Battle Mode could be a HUGE reason for people to buy.

The storage space continues to be an issue. While that was inevitable with a portable system, it is still frustrating, especially since I really wanted to go digital-only.

Nintendo is a master at making games with a small file size, but if the 3rd parties do come that 128GB will be laughable. Heck that goes for second party too. (Looking at you Retro)

FUCKIN SAVAGES IN THAT FUCKIN BOX Prestigious

I've never bought anything digitally until it had been out awhile and it was at a crazy sale price other than like VC games so the storage isn't a big issue for me. I like physical. Can't get any money back from a digital file if I'm over a game.

As someone who carried around an ac adapter for my Game Gear that was literally as heavy as the system when I was young, carrying around individual game carts doesn't bother me lol

You can't even fit Smash Wii U with all of its DLC on the original 8 GB Wii U. Obviously 128 is a lot more, but if they are going to promote things like Skyrim then that is not going to last long.

I've been out of the Nintendo realm for quite a while, GC was the last I owned. were battle modes not a normal mode in the other Mario Kart games? the last one I had was Double Dash

Mario Kart 8 technically had battle mode, bit they just reused the stages instead of building arenas, making it almost unplayable. The games before 8 still had regular battle mode.
