I'm pretty sure that was his ship that was boarded by Vader so either:
    a.) He dead.
    b.) He got captured.

Fair enough. I agree that there are plot points that seem to have fallen off the map, I guess I was disagreeing with the writer's suggestion on how they could have been done differently. Again, I think Chirrut and Baez had a good payoff with their deaths and the use of the force (I detailed that in my first post). I think Cassian's ruthless was addressed in the second act. That to me doesn't mean we have to address it again in the third act. Though, maybe if they had killed him off in a similarly ruthless fashion, that probably would have been a more fitting end for his character. Ahmed was probably wasted the most in the film, his character didn't have much to do or much payoff. And I've said it before in this thread, but I'll say it again here, the use of kyber crystals was a huge missed opportunity. They definitely set that up to be an important component in the beginning and it's never mentioned again after they leave Jedha. Ultimately there's a lot of missed opportunity in this film, but there's a lot that's done really well too.

This movie brings up a pretty interesting question with regards to the purpose of films within a Cinematic/extended universe. When I look at this film in terms of a standalone film, it kind of fails to hold a certain weight. Certain characters seem flat (Galen, Krennic, Saw Gerrera come to mind) and other parts seem out of place/unnecessary (Mon Mothma & Bail Organa's Obi-Wan side chat, Vader showing up). But in the context of the franchise, this movie adds so much to the Star Wars universe. Characters like Galen and Krennic make more sense because of an outside novel. Saw Gerrera has more back story because of a tv show. And we all know why Vader works in the this movie because of what we already know about his character.

So the question is, in these expanded universe type movies (Star Wars, Marvel being the big ones) where we see so much interconnection of characters and stories weaving together to tell a much larger narrative, is it okay for a movie to lean on the outside canon to add context or does this type of larger story telling eventually work to weaken these franchises? I think you can argue for either point. I'd be interested to hear some of your thoughts on this.

  4. I choose to enjoy star wars in the context of all media. Catalyst makes Rogue One better. The other books and Rebels make the universe better.

That doesn't excuse the shortcomings of the movie, however. A movie shouldn't rely on books or comics to make it more complete. But because of the way I choose to approach Star Wars, I can personally overlook it.

I disagree that the Vader scene is tacked on. Aside from being one of the best moments in the saga it is a great bridge of tension between R1 and Episode IV. Vader is fighting tooth and nail to retrieve that information, literally on their heels. I think it's a perfect segue into the original trilogy.

  7. Saw it a 2nd time and enjoyed it a lot more to be honest. Most Star Wars films do for me, so it only makes sense. The theater both times was iffy on the ending, I personally loved it.

I was almost positive though throughout the movie (even round when the trailers started) that Jyn/Andor would end up being Rey's parents, so I was on the edge the whole time during that ending.

I think K2's death was one of the areas that Mikey G. fumbled the score. The moment should have been given more impact.

I felt the score was incredibly generic and unmemorable throughout. I felt the same way about Giacchino's work on Jurassic World. I think it's safe to say at this point that Giacchino is not one of my favorite composers.

If you loved it, don't read through the thread. haha. The only thing that will happen is you will question your enjoyment of the movie.

I'm glad I waited until after seeing it to watch this. Can;t say I disagree with them on 90% of their points.

I feel like I've over analyzed the hell out of this movie haha. I'm gonna see it at least one more time though, because I do genuinely enjoy it.

I watched it once in theaters, not giving a shit about the CGI, character development, etc. and then have watched A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back the last two nights... I'm loving the series again.

I haven't had internet at my new apartment for three weeks, but once I get it installed this weekend I'm going to play the shit out of the Rogue One DLC for Star Wars Battlefront.

Has that game improved? I put in maybe ten hours and was not compelled to go back. Stich a bummer of a game. Sequel better make vast improvements.

I love Battlefront but I don't play a lot of shooters, so I'll take the one set in Star Wars over any of the military ones.

I think I might have been spoiled with the original games. They were so much more accessible imo.

I've really enjoyed battlefront and I'm not a fan of FPS either.

It also may be because I'm actually pretty decent at this one for some reason.

^ Wouldn't say it has improved, but this is my answer, too. I'm also not a huge gamer so I'll sometimes play a couple of hours when I get home from work about once a week. Never been into FPS games, but this one actually appeals to me.

I would say though that for how much money I've spent on the game and the DLC, the amount of total content in the game is not much at all. That was a huge gripe for a lot of people. Also, the game is damn near useless if you're trying to play locally. Lots of missed opportunities there.

That said, I'm still pumped to play the DLC after seeing this latest movie. It's been killing me to know it's out and I haven't been able to play.

Yeah I loved the originals and they were better. But visually Battlefront is great and I can fly x-wings so I have what I want, flaws aside

The DLC modes are fantastic too but they are all limited to just a couple of maps each so that takes a lot of the fun out of what could be great features. Sabotage mode is amazing but you only get to play on four maps...

To me, the CGI made Tarkin look older here than ANH. I loved the movie though and don't really have any real complaints

Finally seeing this tomorrow. Lots of theatres pretty much sold out in Northern New Jersey over the next few days.
