Vader's scene at the end was something I dreamt about since I was a kid.

  3. This thread seems a little intense for me, but I have nowhere else to talk about this right now so I'll keep this brief:

I loved this movie. Like, a lot. Definitely riskier than TFA and I really appreciated that (even though I also love TFA). Most of my complaints were minor and had more to do with the politics of the movie/some of the characters and how dark some of the shots were (tbf I wasn't wearing my glasses). Honestly thought the CG characters were fine (great even, I loved seeing Leia at the end and my fiancee had no idea they were CG), didn't really mind the pacing and loved the ending/fate of the team. And that shot of Jedha's destruction from inside the Death Star...wow. Honestly probably a top three Star Wars film for me.

Also thought it was cool that my fiancee loved it and she's literally only seen this and TFA, haha. We started to watch the original trilogy and it just wasn't for her, which is fine, but I'm glad she's enjoying these new films and I like giving her the background info before each one.

I can't help but wonder if Vader originally slaughtered the main characters once they escape the beach and board the ship with the plans (there's images and footage of Jyn, Cassian, K2 running on the beach with plans-in-hand).

I watched Episode IV last night and I had to laugh at the contrast. Rogue One has the beam from the Death Star slowly making its way to the core of the planet as they slowly watch the whole thing crumble... In A New Hope, they shoot the beam and the planet pops like a balloon :crylaugh:

But as far as your fiancee not loving the original trilogy, have you tried watching it after seeing Rogue One? Rewatching Episode IV last night made me realize that the new movie had really reignited my interest in the original films. I don't know if I just didn't pay enough attention before, but it was definitely easier to follow and piece together after seeing the prequel story. Gotta imagine it would be similar for someone who's never seen them.

    Single Reactor Test, brah.

(In R1 they are only testing a fraction of the power)

I'm not surprised that opinions are all over the place for this, I expect them to be for the rest of the series.

After I saw the movie I started watching all the empire scenes from all 3 movies on YouTube. When I was younger I thought all the scenes on board star destroyers were boring but now I'm interested in the empire's politics all of a sudden.

Rewatching it the first half is more enjoyable but only because I know what happens in the second half.

I've only seen their 2 hour "review" of TPM. This is the most annoying thing I've ever watched.

The first half of this movie was really tedious for me. It just felt a little all over the place and I wasn't able to follow the finer details of the story all that well, unless I'm just that easy to lose. Once everything got going in the second half, though, I thought it was awesome. I think I enjoyed The Force Awakens more than this movie as a whole, but the last 30 minutes of Rogue One is the best Star Wars I've seen since the original trilogy. I was really pleasantly surprised at the direction it took and how much it blew me away in the home stretch. And, oh man, Vader's appearances were incredible.

Also, this is random, but did the tone of this movie remind anybody else of The Hunger Games? Specifically the Mockingjay films? The lighting felt so dark and Felicity Jones even looked like Katniss Everdeen to me the entire film. Almost distractingly so.

Did you make it past their opening bit? I'm well into the actually discussion section. And they are making a lot of good points.

I understand being annoyed at the opening bit. But even that is spot on.

I liked this a fair amount. I don't think I disliked the first half as much as most people did but I also don't think I liked the second half as much as most people seemed to. I liked TFA a lot more than this. I also still don't think Darth Vader is cool. #kyloren4life

Honestly, I don't see how the character motivations are unclear in the 2nd act. Jyn's motive is clear, she now wants to find and rescue her father. Cassian has seen some good in the daughter of Galen Erso and is now conflicted with his orders to kill (Side note: I think the part where Jyn saves that kid on Jedha was used to show Cassian that she wasn't just some selfish/cold human. It sets up the conflict he has when it comes to shooting Galen. In all the criticisms I've seen of Jyn and Cassian's relationship, it seeming random that Cassian would have conflict about shooting Galen, this little bit hasn't been brought up).

I don't think we needed some elaborate heist planning scene to get the death star plans. I think the fact that they wing it plays into the urgency of the mission in the eyes of our main characters. They've seen first hand what the death star can do. Also, um it's pretty clear none of them have been to Scarif before, so they have no idea of the layout to the imperial base. Therefore a drawn out heist planning scene would have made no damn sense.

I don't think Bodie needs to be in an X-wing during the final battle. He's a cargo pilot, not a fighter pilot. And I'm pretty sure Chirrut is channelling the force when he's walking towards the switch. It's the force that protects him. This is actually setup pretty well with the Death Troopers. They are the only imperial troopers we see in the film (in the Star Wars universe) who prove to be lethal with their aim. It's pretty clear to me that the force is at work in causing them to miss all of a sudden.

I do however agree with the use of Vader. As cool as that final scene is (and I am still really glad it's in there), it feels tagged on at the end. They could have used the same scene within the context of the battle with a little more setup. Also wasn't a huge fan of Cassian coming back from the dead to kill Krennic. And he's right to point out the Bodie losing his mind subplot from the first act had no payoff. I think we all agree that scene is pointless.

It's not necessarily about character motivations being unclear, but inadequately dramatized. A lot of important things are introduced with characters (Jyn's necklace, Donnie Yen's belief in the force, his friend's lack of interest in it, Ahmed's betrayal of the Empire, Diego Luna's ruthlessness) that are introduced as important, character defining things, but then they don't play into their resolutions dramatically at all. It's so purposeful that they're introduced, it's strange that they're ignored/not fully realized afterwards.

I don't think I've read a piece on the film, even positive, that doesn't admit it has glaring and deep seated functional flaws, just as I don't think I've read a negative piece that doesn't admit it does a lot of things really spectacularly. This is not the best version of this film that could have been made.
