As a Star Wars fan, I was able to just turn my brain off and have fun with Rogue One but Red Letter Media's review is fucking hilarious. At least watch the first three minutes or so.

  2. Are you watching in chronological order or episode order? It should definitely be watched in chronological order in my opinion.

I don't fully agree with everything in the RedLetterMedia review, but they are always entertaining. I think the consensus is that the characters should have been better developed, but I don't think they were so underwritten that it made the third act un-meaningful. I understood most of their motivations by the end of the film. Jyn finally found something to fight for by reconnecting with her father and fulfilling his sabotage of a superweapon and thus redeeming him. Cassian realizes that blindly following orders only weakens the cause even if it's technically for the greater good. Bodie too wants to redeem Galen and himself for aiding the Empire. Chirrut and Baez had had their home world and purpose as Guardians of the Whills destroyed by the Empire. All of this could have been better established with a little more info on the characters backstories given, but I still understood and cared about their fate at the end of the film.

Can someone explain to me the whole business with the shield over Scarif?

Once the rebel ships came into play, the shield was shut, so Cassian and Jyn have the realization that they are now stuck on the planet and must find a way to transmit the plans to the rebels above the planet. But the only way to transmit the plans is to.... break the shield to get the signal through? So why not just break the shield and GTFO? I feel like I'm missing something here.

This was a little odd to me at first two, but the way I see it at that point the most surefire way to the plans in the hands of the rebels would still be to transmit them. They could have attempted to just fly out with the plans through the shield gate, but the Empire knew they were there at that point and would be all over them if they were trying to fly out with the plans.

Yeah I got that he was supposed to be crazy and paranoid but it was just so hammy to me haha. The scene with that creature where he says something about how "an unfortunate side effect is that one tends to lose one's mind" was cringe inducing to me.

Yea, that scene is the biggest misstep in the whole movie. It had no pay off, I can't believe this movie went under reshoots to fix things and THAT scene was scene as okay to keep. His introduction was a little too weird as well, ("LIES! DECEPTION!) he definitely should have toned that down. I really liked him in the scene with just him a Jyn though.

That's what I thought too. Their cover was blown, so there was very little chance of them ever getting out before they A) got captured B) caused hundreds more rebel ships to get destroyed trying to save them from the ground or C) forced the Empire to just say "screw it" and use the Death Star on them anyway. We know how that played out...

One thing that I forgot about that I really didn't like was the C3PO/R2 cameo. It makes complete sense for those two to be in the movie, but it should have been in a complete scene or two. Instead it feels like a gag, like something out of Anchorman or something.

I really want to see the version of this that Edwards originally intended

Was anyone else super excited to see Jimmy Smits back as Bail Organa? He's been a favorite of mine since the West Wing.

He's awesome, but I wish he had some better dialogue to work with. His lines were pretty forced.

A directors cut would be pretty cool for this one. I don't know what Disney's history with extended versions or director's cuts are, but the Marvel universe doesn't seem to have many (I should note that I don't follow the Marvel Universe very closely though, so I could be wrong).

We know that the ending changed and this whole process was a part of that change. We just don't know the details of what exactly changed.

The more I think about this movie the more I'm disappointed by it, but maybe I'm just bitter that almost none of my favorite shots from the trailers made it into the final cut.

That could be why it was changed because maybe it wasn't feasible to physically get the "file" off the planet? Can't really guess that one.

I man from the looks of it they either couldn't broadcast it or it was never meant to broadcast out. There are shots of Jyn on the beach with the plans, one would assume trying to get to a ship to get away. We know their ship got blown up, but was that always there? We just don't know.

That's more or less what I meant. They could have been developing the story to try to physically hand off the plans on the "disk" that Jyn is running with, but then they realized that it was not feasible to have the plans escape without them being captured, killed, or blown up... But like you said, that's just speculation. We don't really know why it was changed.

Well his ship got boarded by Darth Vader so it probably didn't end well for him.

Something tells me they had a very short amount of time to work with him. Like "I have a few hours to do something here." short. I was just over the moon to see him.
