Here's a plot twist, as the technology improves, Lucas Film releases a special edition of of Rogue One with a more realistic looking Tarkin and it's not met with hostility from fans.

  2. I think Leia was more composite than full CG. Which makes sense why I didn't hate it (and it was less time on screen),

  7. I thought Tarkin looked much better than Leia did. If Leia had been on screen as much as Tarkin was, I'm sure most would agree.

Tarkin looked better than Leia. I wasn't fussed on either. Thought they looked good enough and were used well enough for it to not be overbearing or annoyingly shitty.

Rogue One took my expectations and blew them out of the fucking water.

This movie was so awesome and I will argue, better than episode 7.

  11. I'll take "fucked with" SW over the prequels every single time.

As would I. But George Lucas isn't making Star Wars movies anymore, Gareth Edwards and Rian Johnson and Phil Lord/Chris Miller are. I want to see their visions, not meddled with or watered down versions of their visions (granted, Lord and Miller are geniuses who work very well within the structures they're given, so I'm not worried about them).

  13. I'd be curious to hear the directors talk about their visions and if they really do differ as much as some people imply. I've seen nothing that states that definitively from Edward's mouth that this isn't his vision — just speculation from Twitter people who could be very wrong about what they are basing their entire argument on. But, at the end I want a good movie, this one took some shots that missed, but overall was definitely enjoyable. (And TFA was fantastic and is probably my second favorite SW movie now.) I can't speculate if Edwards and writer had a different vision and if it would have been better or worse or whatnot, so I can only talk about what we actually have and know for a fact ... and I've got more positive things than negative to say.

(For all we know all the good parts were the supposed so called studio interference! being lamented, we can't know much else unless people talk. At least we kinda know from David Ayers hinting why SS ended up being a pile.)

HUGE fan of these two, but they're my biggest concern when it comes to a standalone Star Wars story. While Han, Chewy and Lando can be funny characters, I'm hoping Miller and Lord's main background in comedy isn't the driving factor in this, and we still get that gritty, action-packed Solo awesomeness. I'd love to see it in the same vain as Rogue One, but more about smuggling and being chased around the galaxy.

Well, we do know there were reshoots. We can look at what's on film and recognize Gareth Edwards' style (the stunning shot of Jedu exploding up, panning up to the Death Star) and stuff that didn't quite look like his style (the scene in the rain, nothing there was shot with his sense of scale and visual flourish), and then you can track character beats and arcs and see where they skip and jump, which they do a lot in this movie, and infer that there were cuts and re-workings. Yes, we don't know for sure what was re-shot and what was taken out (except in what was seen in the trailers and not in the movies), but there are aspects to this movie that don't work and it feels more like the result of reshoots and cuts than it being the writers and directors' intention. You can take or leave those feelings as far as one wants, I feel like a lot of what doesn't work is probably due to studio interference, but can't know for sure. Overall, what we have is the final work as it stands. Enjoyable, yes. Flawed, yes just like the Force Awakens. In fact, I think I like this one a little bit more.

I'm sure Disney and Lucasfilm make it very hard to talk about the more negative experiences of making a movie with them, at least for a very long time.

But to your original point, yes, I'll take Rian Johnson and Gareth Edwards and Phil Lord/Chris Miller making Star Wars movies over a prequel-like scenario, Disney interference and all. So, I'm hopeful. And however much of this movie didn't work, it at least provided an exceptional visual Star Wars battle that I enjoyed very much, satisfying my neverending urge for awesome Star Wars battles that I previously had to turn to Battlefront or Rogue Squadron to scratch.

    Don't forget Spider-Man 2!

  19. Storks and Last Man on Earth have me not willing to call everything they do brilliant. Hope Lego Batman, Solo, and The Flash are all great though. They hit 2 out of 3 on that and I'll be a happy camper.

  20. Those movies hang out with the prequels and that 4th Indiana Jones movie in the "we don't really exist, skip right on over!" part of my brain.

I haven't seen their TV work (aside from Clone High, which is incredible), but of the movies they wrote and directed, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, the Lego Movie, and the Jump Streets have them batting 1.000 in film work. They're not doing the Flash anymore though, they're doing that animated Spider-Man movie (which I'm more excited for than Homecoming). And they're just producers on Lego Batman.

From Lord and Miller, Clone High still tops my list.

My biggest worry is that they'll make Han and Lando like Jenko and Schmidt from the Jump Street movies, haha.

That's not a diss either though, I love the Jump Street movies. The credits sequence in 22 was fucking brilliant.
