Might be my favorite final act of any Star Wars.

Listening to the Fat Man On Batman review on this, haha. So funny.

Completely disagree with all of this. With the structure of the Empire, there is literally no one else that would make sense besides Tarkin. We know he runs the Death Star in Episode IV so he literally had to be in it. I can see not wanting Ponda Boba and Dr. Evazan but your other points are nitpicky at best.

Maybe if they thought up a good reason to only have Tarkin on screen as a hologram it would have been better. I don't think he would've looked as fake in hologram form.

For everyone who loved the final battle, I'd highly suggest watching The Clone Wars TV show as there's some amazing scenes in that show as well. If you're on the fence or want to watch a few of the good ones to get a feel for it, I'm sure there's tons of people here or in the Star Wars Universe thread who'd be more than willing to help. I'm not gonna lie and say they're all great, but the last few seasons have some amazing multi episode arcs.

They didn't NEED to have him in here. All they had to do was have a higher up Imperial or Vader name drop him at the end when Krennic dies. Something like, "Tarkin will need to come take over and clean up this mess." Or something to that effect. Or only have him in one scene where we mostly see his reflection. His part was a bit bigger than I ever expected.

Upon my second viewing, my initial opinion remains the same, overall Tarkin looks fine. While Leia still looks weird. They held on her face for too long, cutting away a couple second earlier would have helped in that particular shot.

Then reduce Tarkin's role. And recast, don't do CGI. His presence undercuts Mendelsohn's antagonist role, and they don't even do anything interesting with how Tarkin's influence affects Mendelsohn's character. Nothing about his arc or resolution is tied to Tarkin, so why have him interact with Tarkin so much?

You're free to disagree with my issues about the script being underdeveloped and lacking. However, since they come from the basic functionality of storytelling and character, I don't feel they're "nitpicky" at all. They are flaws that keep this work from being as good as it could have been.

I am glad you enjoyed the movie.

I never thought people would be so concerned about those characters being CGI, but I guess I get it. I think he was just there to establish the other villain's place in the pecking order... Just seemed to me like his whole "arc" was about wanting relevancy with the Death Star being his claim to fame, but ultimately Tarkin took it from him.

Yes, but that wasn't realized in the final moments. They didn't stick the landing. However, it does "work", I get people being satisfied with it. I just want the movie to do right by Ben Mendelsohn, give him some payoff he can work with.

I thought it was realized in the last shot of him looking up at the Death Star like "shit, Tarkin is killing me with MY weapon..." haha. His character was pretty much written to be a whiny failure so I can see people being unhappy with that as a whole. I get the complaints for sure, I guess I just don't feel strongly either way.

They recast Tarkin in Episode III and it was absolutely atrocious. I'm good on the recasting. More and more things like this are going to be happening so it's better to get used to it now.

I disagree with Tarkin not influencing his arc. Krennic's entire arc is that he is a master manipulator and more working class than any of the other higher ups in the Empire. This is one reason why he carries his Australian accent in the movie, is that it's meant to represent that he's more of an everyman than anyone else in the Empire. You see this by the way that he's fighting to get noticed by the Emperor and Tarkin. There's a constant battle between the two in Catalyst and then in this movie; I truly believe it was important to have that part be included to make him more sympathetic and relateable.

Alright, I've been convinced that Tarkin's presence has a use. I still think his role should have been reduced, and the more interesting part of Mendelsohn's arc is his relationship with Mads and their differing philosophies on building the Death Star, which doesn't get delved into much beyond the very good opening scene and the very bad rainy scene. Since this is a film that touches on blurred and nuanced morality, maybe it'd be more interesting to see that Mads and Mendelsohn actually do get along and even like each other to an extent, and respect each other's knowledge, but are in a constant moral battle over what they're doing. It'd provide Mendelsohn with more layers and make his confrontation with Jyn mean more, especially if he was torn over the death of his old friend at the hands of the Empire he serves, and protecting his life's work and his status in the Empire.

But okay. While I'll never be okay with CGI Tarkin, the villain stuff mostly works. I understand being satisfied with it, even if I think it could have been 1,000 times better. I won't accept being told to read a book to understand this movie better, the movie needs to do its own work, and it executes that work poorly. Especially with the protagonist Rebel team, where my biggest issues remain.

I thought both CGI characters looked fantastic. I was actually blown away by it tbh

Note: didn't realize tarkin was CGI till later (obviously a good thing). But Leia I was like damn, that's great.

I saw it compared to the look of characters from "FInal Fantasy: The Spirits Within" and I totally agree with that. Both Tarkin and Leia brought me out of it.

That being said: I don't think either of them looked horrendously bad, they were just kind of obviously digitally manipulated.

you're in a cult, call your dad

My wife and I braved the weather to go see this Friday night and we both absolutely loved it. I don't know if I love it quite as much as TFA, but it certainly stands on its own and gives me more faith in the idea of the side stories and anthology films we'll certainly be seeing (even past the Han Solo stuff).

While I understand many of the complaints that have surfaced, especially regarding the protagonists as it did feel a bit difficult to find myself attached to them in such a short amount of time, I did like their characters very much (even if lacking in some characterization overall). Jyn is a fantastic main character, dynamic and dramatic, K2SO is probably my favorite droid (I really do just love Alan Tudyk, though), and I really liked Chirrut's character as a "different perspective on the Jedi" in a way -- someone who follows the Force and the same principles of the Jedi, but without the title. I wish I knew a little more about Cassian, as he could have been a great dramatic counterpart to Jyn, but he was still a good character overall.

In the end, the "new Star Wars" has been firing on all cylinders for me, really elevating the series and the canon in a way I wasn't even ready for. I feel totally amped on the universe itself and am hoping to check out the Clone Wars/Rebels TV series (finally), as well as some of the novels, so I can learn even more.

CGI Tarkin really didn't bother me. Honestly, I didn't know it was CGI until after! I really hope the technology isn't abused going forward, but in a movie like this where it was one (very important) side character in a prequel film to a 40 year old movie, I think it was the right choice. I'm going to see it again in a week or two and I'm sure I'll pick it apart now that I know, but it fooled me as I sat there wondering how they got someone so close to Cushing.

It's frightening that the Bojack scenario is probably inevitable, but imo it was cool as hell here, and I think it was done really tastefully as far as doing right by the man himself is concerned.

CGI Tarkin immediately took me out of the movie when he first appeared, got used to it a little more with each scene. Didn't have any issue with Leia oddly enough, though.

CGI Tarkin really took me out of it on my first viewing. Leia less so just because I had already been exposed to it at that point. But it didn't bother me on my second viewing, probably because it wasn't so much of a shock anymore.

I'm going to try and see this at least one more time in theaters.

I dunno. That's a foolish stance to have. No one is saying you are lesser for enjoying those aspects without complaints. I don't know why some people refuse critical thinking/analysis about stuff like this.

People take it personally. Critical discussion of a film and why/how you think it could be improved isn't a bad thing but I genuinely think some people see it as "heres why this movie is awful and therefor you're awful." And it only seems to happen in threads for movies like this or Marvel films where hardcore fandom is the name of the game.
