i cant have a kid til my girlfriend is done with school and since she has two years of undergrad left plus law school it may be a while. but im not getting any god damn younger... i swear she is tho. she is 3.5 years younger than me, no fair.

I can't wait to be a mom and my bf is super excited to be a dad someday.
(I'm not pregnant, FYI)

I get to take care of cute babies at work everyday so my baby fever has been curbed.. a little bit. Shout out to the parents that don't visit their children in the hospital so I get to snuggle them.

 

I love my nieces, they definitely solidified the fact that I want kids. I think I'd be a good dad too.

 

I don't think I want kids. I used to want to. But I can barely take care of myself.

I go back and forth. I just feel like it might be really shitty to make them grow up in our fucked up society. It's bad now but I can't even imagine what it'll be like in a decade.

another way to see it is, not to get all hokey and "I believe the children are our future" but it feels like maybe it's our duty to make the next generation less terrible than ours, although obviously that doesn't necessarily involve being a parent yourself

 

Man. I can't wait to have a family. My ex was big into the idea of adopting cause she felt the world already has too many people and I think I would have been fine with that tbh.

 

I guess I'm missing the parent gene or something. Anytime this topic comes up, in any setting really, the responses always range from an emphatic "I can't wait to be a parent" to a very tepid "well I'm not really sure" or "I'd like to but I don't know if I'd be a good parent/I have the money/I'll find the right partner."

If I'm being honest, I'd probably rather forfeit my own life on the spot than have a child for whom I'm responsible for 18 years. Also, even if I found a partner whom I deemed impossibly perfect in almost every facet, her wanting a child would still be a dealbreaker.

Now, I don't think I'd be a good parent in the first place -- but even if I knew I would, I absolutely wouldn't want the responsibility. And I also tend toward the anti-natalist view that bringing a new conscious entity into the world without its consent has more moral downside than moral upside. This is especially true since I myself didn't really enjoy my childhood and, even at almost 30, am still ambivalent on whether the sum of my life experiences has been positive or negative.

Hate to be a downer, but figured I'd share an honest perspective outside the norm. I just always wonder whether I'm really that far removed from everyone else's perspective, or if maybe some of the more tepid answers I hear are filtered by societal expectations.

This idea is over the top to me like, you're doing a favor to something that doesn't exist by not bringing it into existence in case maybe it won't enjoy existing

I'm def team adopt or foster. There are soooooo many kids who need a home that it seems unnecessary to have a bio kid. there was a kid this year in my program who I legit would have adopted if I'd been allowed to but he went into the custody of someone else. my job usually makes me not wanna have kids tho lol. 18 years is a long time and of course it doesn't just end after that. I think I'm selfish and would rather spend the money and resources doing fun things, seeing shows, buying stuff lol, etc. I wouldn't say never, but I would legit be relieved if I met someone who didn't want kids cause I always fear I'll be the deal breaker in the situation. so I guess I wouldn't go out of my way to have a kid but if I met one who needed a home I might?

 

Birth rates in the west a declining pretty steadily. It is safe to say you're normal.

All of the reasons I have that are pro having children are selfish, e.g., wanting to raise little Huey Newtons.

 

I feel like this kid conversation happens every 50 pages or so. Definitely recycling topics because we're people and there's only so much to babble about lol

 

I think I'd only want one kid. Guess that's what happens when you grow up with five older siblings.

I loved being an only kid (and still do). Probably why I'm as selfish and egotistical as I am, so you run that risk, but man, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
