I don't think it will be humanly possible for me to dislike the game honestly. That FFVII prequel on PSP had a really weird battling system and I ate that shit up and loved it.

Why is everyone so against turned based battle systems? Is it a lack of patience? That doesn't compute for me becuase a game like FF15 is not fast paced overall. Why can't a great turned based system work in a modern FF game?

I remember seeing shots of the battle system and seeing it was more live action KH style but wasn't sure if it was confirmed since I do my best to avoid VII talk haha. I'm glad to hear it's actually confirmed and can't wait to hear XV detractors praise VII for the same thing!

Couldn't agree more, i'm stuck looking for crappy Iphone RPG's to find any new turn based action.

Very mixed feelings about this. Probably will love it no matter what though.

Nah I'll abstain if the combat system is more of this.

I understand that turned based systems can be flawed. Mainly because of how tedious they can be and how repetitive they normally are especially early in games. But I think they really offer so much more when done right.

There is no reason to change the system in FF7. I was disappointed by that news.

I love turn based. FFX still has my favourite battle system of any Final Fantasy but I like XV's battle system more than VII's and I think it'll suit the remake more.

Yeah, SE has been slowly moving away from turn-based since X (XI and XIV excluded, of course, being true MMOs). XII retained the ATB system but allowed you to move around the battlefield in real time, XIII automated the entire battle process and relegated the play to basically a game manager, and then Lightning Returns was almost essentially a fully real-time system. Now XV is entirely real-time. I don't know that they ever will go back in a mainline FF title ever again, they certainly seem to be fully subscribing to the philosophy of "Western RPG conventions are what sells now, we're going to just do more of that," especially considering how heavily-influenced XV is by the West.

It was on PS2 originally but they are remaking it next year for PS4 as Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. Look for it in the Spring.

I think there's a lot of negative things about XV that come from them trying to copy western RPG's but I don't think the combat's one of them. I think the combat is the way it is mainly because it was originally supposed to be a side Final Fantasy and was created by the same guy who made Kingdom Hearts where the combat isn't all that far from this.

The combat is XV is great, so if the VII remake is similar, I'll enjoy it.

I don't necessarily think the western conventions in XV are bad things by any means, it's just the clearest evidence yet that SE has no interest in revisiting turn-based battles or many of the other design elements that have been staples of JRPGs since the NES. The fact that they are not only willing, but seemingly eager, to severely piss off hundreds of thousands of gamers by changing the combat in FFVII Remake is further evidence. I personally really enjoy the combat in XV but I also love turn-based battles as well; it's what I grew up on, after all. So I get both sides of the discussion, although in the end all that matters to me is that the game is good.

And FFXV is very, very good.

I just mean bad for me personally. I do kind of think they're bad in the general scheme of things as it makes the biggest JRPG in the world lose a lot of it's own character and feel very western (at least to the point I am in the game). I do think the same turn based system they used to have in an upgraded FFVII would feel a bit too archaic if I'm honest and would turn off a ton of potential new players.

I think Dragon Quest XI is going to have turn based battles and maybe Persona 5 too?

    yeah good okay Prestigious

Turned-base RPGs are kinda antiquated, at least on consoles (not handhelds) from what I've seen. Sucks because I love turn-based.

I do like that they've been able to take western tropes (vast open world, multitude of fetch-y side quests, real-time battle system) and marry them with JRPG aesthetics/characters/story. It's a unique hybrid that really sets itself apart from everything else out there. That said, the game definitely does lose a bit of what makes Final Fantasy, well, Final Fantasy in the process.

And yeah, Dragon Quest XI is maintaining turn-based battles. Maybe SE is less afraid to stick to that system there because Dragon Quest isn't really as popular worldwide as Final Fantasy? I don't really know.

I do think they'll try to reinvent turn based combat in the future too. I just also think that if they worked 10 years to make another turn based game people would revolt hahaha.

I personally really dislike huge open worlds where the main thing you do is fetch-y sidequests and I feel like it's a lame thing that's populating so many games right now that it's disappointing to see move to Final Fantasy. I'm cool with the battle system because it's way better than the majority of those open world western games, ha. I think even the first area where it's basically just an american desert and then the second where it's a forest is incredibly western though. It just feels like we're in America with crazy monsters for the first 10 hours.

Idk, I just feel like Final Fantasy has always been a series that wants to be flashy and exciting and this is the direction that's led. Turn based systems were a way of making spectacles happen on screen, now they can do that in real time. At least there's some RPG's left for turn based fans. I'm very excited for DQ and Persona.
