For better or worse, people will go to see something in theaters, rent it, etc just because it was nominated for or won an Oscar. So I understand the “who gives a shit about the Oscars” sentiment, but unfortunately they have a real influence on what art outside people seek out.

 

Exactly. If the Oscars had the impact of the MTV Movie Awards no one would complain. Think of all of the casual movie fans who are going to suffer through Emilia Perez because they see the Oscar brad.

 

Yeah anti-Oscars stuff sounds like dorky “sports ball” stuff to me lol

 

It also means more than just getting a statue to the people that get nominated or win. It could be the difference that changes someone’s career with the offers and leverage it gives them just from being nominated.

They’re still dumb af like all award shows obviously. But they do actually mean something in the end.

 

Except “sportsball” people don’t watch sports and “the Oscars are nonsense” people watch actual movies. I know the impact they have, I’ve posted about them plenty. But why should that mean we can’t make fun of their obvious flaws?

 

Oscars should 100% be mocked.

 

It’s like the Rolling Stone lists. We all know they suck, the frustration comes from the fact that they are used as a reference for people trying to get into the medium. Like the imdb 250 or now Letterboxd

 

I thought my fix for voting was reasonable.

 

Why does everything have to be a debate here

 

Debate is the whole premise of the Oscars! It’s pitting works art against each other in competition, this is the discourse it breeds.

 

Why else do you think at least half of the users post on this website? Lol

 

I don’t know if I’ve seen a worse film than Emilia Perez when trying to fill in my Oscar blind spots. American Fiction was bad, but it was at least tonally consistent and well made. Emilia Perez was rotten to the core

 

What’s wrong with it? I haven’t gotten around to it and I haven’t heard anything about it outside the award buzz honestly.

 

I hated the music, i thought the acting was pretty shitty, the script sucked, the tone is inconsistent, it looked like shit. Pretty much everything about it haha. I genuinely don’t know what anyone would see it in. someone who cares more than me can talk about why they find it offensive (I didn’t pay much attention to that).

 

It had already been posted in the Oscar thread and as phaynes said in that thread, who didn’t know that

if we all know it sucks as said then what’s the point of complaining about it
