Eh, she’s not entirely wrong in those quotes but critics aren’t less valuable because they don’t “do it themselves” and art without criticism is just colorful masturbation

I don’t think artists are required to respond to criticism or even engage. It’s totally fair to respond the way she did. She’s not invalidating the criticism either but it’s weirdly being twisted that way?

It is such a lazy way to try and dismiss all criticism of the film. I am sure there are a lot of people who will dismiss or ridicule the film from an anti-trans angle, but the majority of critics she is referring to are not looking at it that way.

I don’t think trans stories should be a monolith. Nothing should be just one kind of thing. And she herself is a trans woman who believes in this story. She’s not dismissing the critics; she’s actually calling for more stories, and I don’t see what’s so wrong with that.

She implies critics are stupid and then says it bothers her that people who don’t like the movie are “just sitting at home” as if that invalidates their opinion. Implying that trans people who didn’t like the movie are stupid is just preposterous. We need more stories because we need more stories, not because trans critics sat on their asses and disliked the movie in bad faith

I am hearing a lot of criticism of this film from the angle of it was made by a French filmmaker who did very little research on Mexican culture, only cast one Mexican actor, and It perpetuated anti-mexican stereotypes.

Apparently this film is very disliked in Mexico.

I keep seeing that song clip where they list off all the different types of surgeries and it’s so bizarre and off-putting

Such a completely boring video saying nothing interesting or new at all. And that’s the thing about this movie. At least it kept me guessing and had me laughing along with it. Yes it was heightened and absurd. Maybe it was meant to be? I wish people could’ve just had fun with this movie like I did.

Nothing new? You already knew the casting director said they tried finding Mexican actors and there weren't any that worked?

It’s just that the movie succeeds for me despite that, possibly because of its audacity to do so. IMO the film is a parable meant to challenge viewers into facing the idea that everyone has a right to live out their identity, no matter their morals or history, and so this works for me in that sense. It’s no big deal to me that the cast is multicultural, so are the characters. People seem to miss that in their hatred of this film. Also, it enrages me when the idea of “only write what you know” comes up in media discourse. Maybe this isn’t a perfect portrayal of the setting, maybe it’s stereotypical, maybe he should’ve done more research—but man, a world without the freedom to allow for writers to imagine perspectives is a one-way ticket for dull art—and the implication that this movie just shits on Mexico without any sympathy seems to be in bad faith.

My MIL watched this and absolutely loved it so she has been nagging my wife to watch it. We put it on the other night and made it about 45 mins in before I tapped out. What is going on? Why is the music so bad? Why is it shot like that? I was waiting for it to be some sort of absurd dream sequence or other bullshit to get to the real film. Is it like that the entire time? I assume I will have to finish it at some point.

I don't have anything against Zoe Saldana, but I am praying Ariana upsets her at the Oscars.

I usually try to be a completionist about Oscar season films, but I don't know if I have it in me to finish this.
