I have the opposite dynamic with my current partner, she wants me to play more lol. I haven’t really done all that much acoustic playing at my house since I got a practice space and started focusing on using my gear for electric songs

Laura likes when I play guitar except for the fact that I'm almost always playing while she tries to work

 

I played guitar around beads once and she was like "oh. You "play" guitar" and I never did again.

 

In most circumstances I’d think damn that’s mean but, knowing you and Beads’ dynamic, my response was instead “awww that’s Beads. Adorable.” Lmao

i would more but megan barely listens to music in general lol it is not something she has time for

 

i shouldn’t say that. she likes music and likes music i’ve recorded lol. just hearing raw unmixed shit coming from an amp is not in her wheelhouse and acoustic is even lower than that

 

in general even outside of music she isn’t really interested in the process of stuff she just wants results, baby

One of the best things I learned when playing solo is you have to be quiet. Like really. Even if you’re kinda punk or whatever it ruins the song if you play it forte / fortissimo, gotta reserve that for only the most cathartic points of the set.

Abrasive strumming and shouting in your face really doesn’t read the same solo as it does in a band with drums matching that impact, and tends to pigeonhole you into some freak folk / folk punk category rather than people appreciating your diverse musicality cause it’s so jarring thats what they take away from your performance the most, that you were loud

much like playing drums in a small room, the way to sound engaging and “tight” with one guitar / one voice is to exaggerate the quiet parts so that when you’re playing medium volume it HITS without becoming a noisy echoey wash, while the quiet parts encourage people to stfu and listen closer to your lyrics and really get touched by the tender moments

(A tangent in response to phaynes “raw unmixed guitar” bit, no one except guitarists likes the sound of an amp played full volume by itself)

i don’t even fully mean that though. just in a recording context, there are takes and farting around between takes. she doesn’t want that. she just wants the EQ’d and produced final thing. she similarly has no interest in deleted scenes of movies lol

 

Yeah I assume that’s most people. My partner works in a music venue so she’s the opposite she will have like thought out takes about why the guitar part isn’t fitting right there and maybe it’s more of a tone issue than the notes or whatever lol

The way I hyperfixate on music i kinda need a partner who can follow me down that road, someone who is also pointing out neat details in the music when we’re on a road trip or at a concert etc
