In particular on the songs released, I noticed a lack of the ethereal vocal effect that dominated the other prior releases.

Take “deep fake“ for the last album. The opening hook and the chorus are absolutely shit hot. But when it gets into the mumbled/windy Blown away verses, it did them no favors. Especially because Sam is such a great fucking singer. Not a great metal singer, a great singer. I don’t know why you would take one of your strongest assets and hide them behind a plug-in.

But that seems to be gone on this so far, and I am super stoked for what else is to come.

    I don’t disagree!

FTTWTE was my favorite record of the year when it came out. But I think there are a few songs that benefit from either being stripped back or a bit more clear.

Take the difference of “Animals” on the record vs. the Live at Abbey Road. There may be a few more prominent strings in there on the live version, but it POPS. It sounds more immediate and pulsating. And Sam’s voice soars all over the song. That’s all I’m asking for.
