Big D is playing one of my favorite local bars. This is going to be insane, that room can only fit maybe 70 people tops?

I didn’t know this book existed , has anyone in here read it?

I feel bad for Monique for getting snubbed but also her bands only radio hit is of a cover song. They are the alien ant farm of ska bands so I get it.

Like if somebody on the street today asked me to recommend them some ska bands to check out i would tell them to listen to Less Than Jake, the mighty mighty Bosstones and Goldfinger. I would never think to bring up save Ferris.

Laura Jane Grace X Catbite Operation Ivy cover set from the Empty Bottle Riot Fest pre-show dropped on Bandcamp. Benefit for Sweet Relief and Best Friends animal shelter in LA. Quality is awesome and I'm SO stoked that a proper recording of this dropped!

Just wish I had been able to stay awake long enough and didn't leave right after Catbite. LOL

Late to reply here but... If you're a fan of 90s ska and/or have a passing interest in punk/alternative culture from the 90s at all it's very much worth a read! Aaron goes deep and breaks it all down in a really compelling way through a pop-culture lens. Very much worth a read.

That thing with Monique on IG feels weird to me in some ways. I don't recall ever hearing and/or seeing that phrase "ska now more than ever" before that book released. Or anywhere else sense, really. But I'm not really a Save Ferris historian or anything. And claiming that Save Ferris "cleared the way" for bands on radio is just an odd look. That single hit in 1997... The same year the Bosstones and Reel Big Fish hit and after Goldfinger, Sublime, No Doubt, and Rancid all had rock radio and MTV hits with ska-leaning songs.

But, all that said, I think her general emotional response is a lot more complicated than the other stuff. Monique gets a lot of shitty energy thrown at her by straight-up misogynists, sexist remarks, etc. There's still people who assume their band got successful because of (insert male ska band dude here). She actually did Aaron Carnes' podcast in April 2024 and you can tell when she talks about the era, the band's success, and all that -- it's something she really struggled with and still struggles with that today (and justifiably so). The label pushing the band in different directions, afore-mentioned sexism, etc.

The TL;DR version is that I don't think anything in that book was meant to deride or harm her or the band. I also don't think Aaron ripped them off in any way. But I understand why she might assume the worst of another person and really feel for her regardless of what the intention was.

    (Hopefully this makes sense.)
