I love red beans and rice but it's not a barbecue staple around here and I feel like people who make barbecue aren't as well equipped to make a killer red beans and rice

But yeah a good red beans and rice HITS

I've had some great octopus but that was so different than anything I've gotten elsewhere and so great

 

new orleans one of my top 3 cities on my list to travel to that i havent yet, a lot of the good bbq spots here have great red beans and rice but i've had ordered some before that have surely made me question ever ordering them again

pulled pork, jalapeno sausage and some combo of 2 sides (mac & cheese, baked beans, potato salad or corn pudding)

some places really differentiate with their sides, atleast they did in Houston

Q39 was really good in Kansas City, props to them

New Orleans, despite being maybe the 25th or 30th largest city by metro population in the country, has a top 5 food and bar scene and a top 10 music scene

There's a place in Dallas that does fried octopus suction cups and it is one of the best foods I've had in my life

 

I can be snobby about cities being “ugly” but I’ll even admit that outside the main tourist districts and the “pretty” urban neighborhoods near the parks etc, most of New Orleans is ugly as shit. (The city core itself has that gorgeous French inspired vibe but outside of that it looks a lot like Baton Rouge haha).

so if I like New Orleans this much despite feeling like the majority of it is ugly to drive around, that should tell you how highly I think of the culture that exists there in spite of it mostly looking like an industrial seaport town with limited trees lol
