coming back to this post is honestly a success. If I don’t damage my own fucking car twice, we made more than we spent despite on average like 20 people being at each show (two of them had less than 10 people, three of them had 40ish people, most were in that 20ish range). This was the dead of winter as well, shows will likely be easier to draw in better weather and they will also draw more as we get in contact with more and more established bands in each city.

we also weren’t really that cheap about food, we had Waffle House breakfast a couple times and often chose fast food over buying something we can make with hot water like ramen / oatmeal / mac and cheese etc, if the venue had a cafe we ate there, etc

most of where we saved money was having places to stay and most of where we salvaged bad shows was selling T shirts but those are still good signs for the future. Having places to stay is a huge part of the puzzle for a DIY band making money & those are people we can likely hit up again other tours. And I’d like to think when we have an album and all sizes of two shirt designs etc we’ll do a lot better in merch sales than we already did with just limited remaining sizes of one shirt design.

as we release music and gather more connections I think it’s feasible by the next year we could be asking for $200 guarantees at shows PLUS selling more merch and coming home from a 10 day tour with $1000 in our pockets.

We had a show get cancelled too, which means a whole day of making no money and spending extra on gas and food to drive to the next town

I’m pretty proud that despite that, despite playing our first tour in 6 years, in the winter when people generally don’t like to go out, with no full band music released, only 1 shirt for merch (sold out of mediums, smalls and 2XLs most of the tour), and mostly in towns I never played in before, and having to replace a tire and a sway bar in my car and get two oil changes (one before, one after) we only lost like a couple hundred bucks. That coulda easily been way more expensive but we did a good job finding support acts, places to stay, hustling merch, and playing well enough to get additional support from other bands and future connections for better drawing shows

 

honestly bro, making money off the door or a guarantee is pretty shakey, if you make sure to always have a dope merch spread that's what will for sure get you to the next city without having to sweat. i'd recommend a shirt, some form of physical media, stickers (hand out for free), and like a novelty item of some sort hat/tote bag/etc. we play in different scenes but still DIY and punk related and i've found this has been a pretty good baseline. also understanding which sizes sell best goes a long way too

We did have stickers with our IG tag on them. At first they were available for “pay what you want” donations but eventually I started just passing them out to the audience before we got on stage so they already had the IG and logo of a band they were going to see for the first time. It helped us convince folks to stay for our set and look us up online
