I do not like the level curve that happens midway through Johto. I just thought it was bananas that the trainers and wild Pokémon I was facing were using guys, like, ten levels below me, which made it tough to train and prep for a gym leader or two, most notably Clair. The way to get the evolution stones is mind-numbing to me too. Lastly, while adding the Kanto region in post-game was super cool when I was younger and still pretty cool today, I wish it were fleshed out more. There’s also zero reason I should be encountering wild Pokémon that are 40 levels weaker than mine at that point in the game too.

I also wish there were more Johto Pokémon in the Johto region and that the gym leaders represented Johto more. Houndour, Sneasel, and Larvitar being post-game bums me out. And on the gym leaders, only half of them have a Johto pokemon as their ace. Would have been cool if Falkner used, say, a Noctowl or if Morty used Misdreavous

I agree with all those points

I just also think gen 1 has a ton of other flaws. There's an entire typing that's completely obsolete because of the move design (this isn't a problem in FRLG but is in RBY) and a typing that is only defensive and has 0 STAB offense. Sabrina is OP compared to the rest of the gym leaders as a result of these attributes (not insurmountable but it's still bad design IMO). Crit rates were way too high. Lots of other stuff I could get into if I thought about it more but that's what comes to mind first

 

I like pokemon but you guys put a lot more thought into it than I do

 

Some of it just makes sense though. You get a Gastly and you're like "I'm excited to see the ghost moves this guy has!" and its strongest base power ghost move even as a Gengar is...Lick.

 

what's the issue, I would hate to be Licked by Gastly
