Teeth has actually grown on me quite a bit, I actually quite dig the structure it has. I STILL just wish the production was better on it, that's really the main thing holding it back.

New one is a ripper, chorus is so inconsequential compared to the rest of it that I don't really mind it, it's fine. Which isn't something you want to hear when talking about a chorus of a song haha but alas, it'll probably go over much better live.

 

the verses of generation no surrender are the first time i've had faith in this album cycle. the rest of the song is messy but it's at least a step up from the other two. i have a deep hatred towards survivor's guilt lmao

 

Now I want them to name the album POTATO.

 

whether I like it or not Survivors Guilt has been stuck in my head for weeks and i’ve been tapping out that wild shuffle beat constantly.

 

I know I complained about the production previously but I will say the drums do sound better on the last two singles than on Voyeurist. It's hard for me to explain accurately because I admittedly don't know much about mixing and all that stuff but they sound like, you know, actual drums, whereas on Voyeurist they occasionally just sounded like synth hits or something. The closest comparison I can think of is the verses of Linchpin by Fear Factory. We're All Gonna Die is probably one of the most egregious examples though I remember Cycle also being kinda bad in that regard

 

The production on Voyuerist is lousy and actively holds that album back.

The production on these three singles actually push the songs to be better.

 

Survivors Guilt has grown on me a ton and I dig Generation too for the most part but I’m hoping that the rest of the album is a little more straight forward UØ and not so much radio rock.. but that’s a huge TBD lol

 

I agree, I don't dislike the production on these songs. Mostly I just don't love the songs haha. I do really dig the verses on Generation, but I was also surprised to hear Spencer say this was "our idea of the heaviest thing that Underoath could possibly make at this point." Implying that there probably aren't many heavier songs like this on the album, and meaning the heaviest song on the album has a radio rock-feeling chorus.

 

And Then There Was Nothing is heavier so I wouldn't read too much about his comment. Who knows what the rest of the album will consist of

 

Reading your takes is interesting because I don't hear anything radio rock in the new songs so far, or nothing like what they were doing on Erase Me at least. I may be totally disconnected from what radio rock in 2024 is meant to sound like?

I'm mostly surprised we haven't gotten a single with a soaring Aaron lead part. Survivors's Guilt comes close during the bridge but it's a bit short and he's mostly relegated to the hook and a couple other lines otherwise. Teeth's chorus is a bit too lowkey to count for me. I'm thinking of something like Thorn, Numb's chorus, his cleans on Cycle, We're All Gonna Die... those were some of my favorite moments on Voyeurist.

 

I haven’t listened to generation yet but I think I know what they mean by radio rock. On the one hand, these songs seem to have show they have their finger on the pulse of some branches of modern metalcore (I previously made a comparison to house of protection), but on the other hand in the post-disambig era I feel like when they do try to push more poppy/radio-friendly elements (like the chorus in the previous single) they often sorta pull from the same realm and even on songs where those elements aren’t the focus, they sorta dominate your memory when the song is done and it least for me personally it’s often a bad aftertaste (until I listen to it 1000 times and grow to love it). Hopefully that all makes sense.

 

I think so. I don't listen to many newer metalcore bands so I don't have a big frame of reference. Where I hear the influence from that modern branch is in the production and more particularly the loudness/abrasiveness, reminding me of Silent Planet's recent records, Loathe's heavier moments or the glitches Code Orange would implement in their songs. Otherwise I tend to assume most metalcore is still aping what BMTH did almost a decade back, something I could hear on Erase Me but not much anymore.

The feat. rumor I had seen was Garrett from Silent Planet, which would've made sense, but Mastodon is totally unexpected if true.

I don’t understand how when a band is apparently calling all the shots they’re letting album cover and track lists / lengths leak out sporadically. Seems odd to me. Just announce the album.

 

A leak kinda means it's out of their control no? Someone close to them or someone whatever degrees from them that has heard the album or knows more about it fucked up or something slipped by

Maybe it popped up too early on an online music store from another country, that sort of thing is common too

 

this tracklist has been sent to me since a while, even before the release of survivor's guilt and generation no surrender, so far i think it's real

i think it was leaked by someone who had listened the album because there was some dude in the underoath reddit that had access to some unreleased stuff, including information about the new record, he also said there is an scrapped album they recorded in 2022

he hasn't sent me the album tracklist but i think that it was maybe him that leaked
